Shikhar Dhawan was born on December 5, 1985 in a Punjabi Hindu family. He completed his schooling from St. Mark’s High Public School, Paschim Vihar, Delhi. Watching his cousin play at the Sonnet Club, he developed an interest in cricket, after which his parents enrolled him in the Sonnet Club at the age of 12. He trained under coach Tarak Sinha. He was initially a wicket keeper for the club but later turned himself into an opening batsman. He scored a century in the club’s under-15 tournament. Since then he has been practicing hard to be a good cricketer. When he played domestic cricket, he was often overlooked by the selectors because of this, after he decided to retire from the game.

Career
He first played for Delhi in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 1999. He was the leading run-scorer in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in which Delhi finished second. Dhawan has scored 755 runs from 9 innings at an average of 83.88 with two hundreds. His impressive performance in Delhi earned him a call-up to the India Under-17 squad for the 2000/01 AFC U-17 Cup. Dhawan was selected for the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, in which he was the leading scorer. He scored 505 runs from 7 innings; This is still a tournament record.

In November 2004, he made his first-class debut in Delhi against Andhra Pradesh. In the first season of the Ranji Trophy, he was the leading run-getter for Delhi, scoring 461 runs from 6 matches.
