Raj Babar was born on Monday, 23 June 1952 (age 71; as of 2023) in Tundla, Uttar Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Cancer. He did his primary studies at Mufid E Aam Inter College, Agra, and then joined Faiz-E-Aam Inter College, Agra. He later graduated from Agra College, Uttar Pradesh. Graduated from National School of Drama, Delhi in 1975 and trained at Acting Methodist School, National School of Drama, Delhi.

Relationships, wife and children
While Raj Babar was studying at the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, he met Nadira Babar, who is the daughter of Sajjad Zaher, a famous Indian writer and founder of the Progressive Writers’ Association. At that time, he worked as a director and writer in various theater productions. Both of them met while working on one of the theater plays written by Nadira. Soon they became friends and fell in love. Raj proposed to Nadira, who was four years his senior, and the couple married on 21 November 1975 (Friday). The couple was blessed with a daughter, Juhi Babar on 20 July 1979 (Friday). The couple had a second child, Aria Babar, on May 24, 1981 (Sunday).
By the time his second child was born, Raj was a well-established actor in Bollywood. In 1982, while shooting for the Hindi film Bheegi Raate, he met Indian actress Smita Patil. During the interview, Raj talked about his first meeting with the late Smita Patil, he said,
I met him for the first time in Rourkela, Orissa, where we went to shoot for Satish Misra’s Bheegi Palken. Our first meeting ended in a kind of skirmish – a sweet skirmish that laid the foundation for our later relationship. I was impressed by his word go.’
Soon he befriended her and fell head over heels for her. When his wife Nadira confronted him and found out that he was having an affair with Smitha, Nadira and her children started living separately. Raj later moved in with Smita and married Smita Patil without divorcing his first wife. On 28 November 1986 (Friday), Raj and Smita were blessed with their first child, Prateik Babar. But their happiness did not last long and Smita Patil died at the age of 31 on December 13, 1986 (Saturday) due to complications during childbirth.
Raj Babar was traumatized by her death, but his first wife supported him during this phase and brought him back. Raj started living with his first wife and children, while Prateik stayed with his grandmother. Earlier, Prateik’s relationship with his father was not so good, but after the death of Prateik’s maternal grandmother, he became closer to his father and step-mother. All three of Raj Babbar’s children followed in his footsteps and pursued acting careers. Her daughter is married to famous Indian television actor Anup Soni.
Raj’s name was also linked with veteran Indian actress Rekha. In an interview, Raj confirmed his relationship with Rekha. She said,
Yes, our relationship has helped me somewhat. Due to certain circumstances, we went together. At that time, Rekha had broken up with her for a long time. He wanted to get away from her. I was in a similar situation. At the same time, we also worked together and relied on each other for emotional support. We tried to understand each other’s problems.”

as an actor
In 1977, he made his debut as an actor in the Hindi film ‘Kissa Kursi Ka’. He appeared in various Hindi films like ‘Sau Din Saas Ke’ (1982), ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ (1980), ‘Kalyug’ (1981), ‘Nikaah’ (1981), ‘Sansar’ (1987) and ‘Bodyguard’ (2011).
In 1992, he acted in the Bengali film ‘Anutap’. He has appeared in several TV serials like ‘Bahadur Shah Zafar’ (1986) as Akbar, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988) as Bharata, ‘Maharaja Ranjit Singh’ (2010) as narrator and ‘Pukaar- Call For The Hero’ (2014) as Amarjeet. Some of her Punjabi films are “Aasra Pyar Da” (1983), “Mahaul Theek Hai” (1999), “Shaheed Uddham Singh” (2000), “Yaaran Naal Baharan” (2005), “Ek Jind Ek Jaan” (2006), “Apni Deek Rista” (2006), “Apni Deek Rista” (2000).

Raj Babar started his political career in 1989 and joined the Indian political party Janata Dal. He later joined the Samajwadi Party and was elected to the Indian Parliament three times. He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 1999. In the Lok Sabha elections (1996), he contested against BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee from Lucknow constituency. In 2004, he was re-elected for a second term in the 14th Lok Sabha elections. He was suspended from the Samajwadi Party in 2006 for his speeches against Samajwadi Party General Secretary Late Amar Singh. In 2008, she joined the Indian National Congress, and in 2009, she defeated Dimple Yadav, wife of Akhilesh Yadav, and was elected to a fourth term in Parliament.
He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Ghaziabad and was defeated by General V.K. with Singh. In 2016, he was appointed as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC), and in 2018 he resigned from the post. He lost by a wide margin to Rajkumar Chahar of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019.

- A criminal case was registered against him in 2015 for pelting stones at policemen during a protest by his former political party Samajwadi Party near Laxman Mela Square in Lucknow. A few months later, Raj and several other political leaders surrendered before a special MPMLA court and Judge PK Rai ordered their release on payment of a fine of Rs. 50,000 each.
- On 7 July 2022, he was convicted in a case involving the assault of an election officer during the May 1996 election. While announcing the two-year jail term, the Lucknow court also imposed a fine of Rs 500. 8500 on it. A polling officer filed a first information report (FIR) against Raj Babar at the Wazirganj police station in Lucknow when Babar contested the elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket.

- After marrying Nadira in 1975, due to lack of finances, he moved to Nadira’s parents’ apartment in Delhi. At that time he sold his scooter for Rs. 6000 and gave this money to Nadira’s mother. In an interview, Nadira said:
I followed him here. But I didn’t want to work. I worked hard, traveled far to film for a living, and acted in plays. I also had a child… I didn’t have a 24-26 inch waist. Where did married actors get good roles back then?”
