YS Sharmila is an Indian politician and the younger sister of YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the seventeenth Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. His late father, I.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 to 2009. Sharmila launched a new political party, YSR Telangana Party, in Telangana on 8 July 2021.

Sharmila married M Anil Kumar in 1995. It was a love marriage and also a second marriage for both of them. Anil, a Hindu Brahmin by birth, converted to Christianity after marrying Sharmila. Founder of Anil World Evangelism, Anil became an evangelist in 1998.

Career
Although Sharmila has never contested electoral politics, she has consistently been part of her brother Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party’s (YSRCP) election campaigns. He first came into limelight in 2012 when he launched the Maro Praja Prasthanam (Another Journey to the People) walk as part of the YSRCP election campaign. Sharmila started her 230-day padayatra on October 18, 2012 at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district and covered 2,250 villages in 116 assembly constituencies in AP. During the mass contact programme, Sharmila touched on various local, state and national issues. Another motive behind the padayatra was to garner support for his brother, who was then arrested by the CBI in the disproportionate assets case. The Yatra ended on 4 August 2013 at Ichchapuram.

He launched another mass outreach program ahead of the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. This time he led an 11-day bus tour across Andhra Pradesh, covering 1,553 km. Here is a video from the bus yatra.

Arrested during Padayatra called ‘Praja Prasthanam’
On 28 November 2022, during a padayatra called ‘Praja Prasthanam’, YS Sharmila and his party members were allegedly attacked by Bharat Sutra Prasamithi (BRS) (earlier known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi TRS) group workers at Chennaraopet, Warangal district, who were protesting against his party’s Redmarkhand. Di. During her padayatra on 27 November 2022, Sharmila accused Paddy Sudarshan Reddy of illegally acquiring land and extorting money by intimidating common people and contractors. The YSR Telangana Party workers accused the BSR Party members of allegedly attacking the caravan in which Sharmila was holidaying and breaking the windows of a car belonging to the YSR Telangana Party. After the incident, the police canceled the permission to hold the padayatra. Speaking to reporters, Sharmila expressed her anger over the cancellation of permission to continue the padayatra and said:
For the last 223 days, I and my party leaders and representatives have been conducting a peaceful padayatra to highlight the plight of people from different walks of life in Telangana. Our rising popularity has shaken Chief Minister KCR and his party members who want to stop me at any cost. ”
In response to the attack on her convoy, on 29 November 2022, Sharmila marched to the residence of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao along with her party members to protest against him and her party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). On his way to the CM’s residence, he was stopped by the police but got locked in the car. After Sharmila refused to get out of the car, the police had to call a crane to tow her car and took her to the SR Nagar police station, where she was arrested along with six other party members. A case was registered against him at the Panjagutta police station under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to obstruct public servant’s duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt in defense of public servant’s duty) and 327 (willfully resorting to illegal acts of property). A few hours later, he was released on bail.

Arrested for assaulting police officers
YS Sharmila was arrested by the police on April 24, 2023, after she was caught on camera manhandling policemen outside her Hyderabad residence following an altercation with police officers. He reportedly assaulted a sub-inspector, rammed his car into a police constable, injuring his leg, and assaulted police officers as they tried to stop him from staging an unauthorized ‘protest’.

- In January 2019, in the wake of her association with Baahubali fame actor Prabhas, Sharmila registered a complaint with the Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s office against the Telugu Desam Party’s social media wing for spreading rumors and posting objectionable content against her. Speaking to media representatives, he said:
They spread rumors that I am having an illicit relationship with actor Prabha before the 2014 elections. I rejected it myself then, and after the election they stopped. Now the rumor mill is still active. “

- YS Sharmila on 20th October 2022 started a padayatra called ‘Praja Prasthanam’ from Chevela district in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana. He spoke about the motive behind his padayatra and said that he wanted to interact with the common people, listen to their problems and find possible solutions. Speaking to the media, Sharmila spoke about the reason for initiating Chevela’s Padayatra and said;
Chevela was sentimentally attached to my father, so I chose this place to start my padayatra, which would also end at the same place. I plan to walk 12-15 km a day and hopefully finish walking in a year.”
