Career
Jagrup Singh Gill began his political career in the 1970s by joining the Indian National Congress. In 1979, he was elected for the first time as an advisor to the Bathinda Municipal Corporation. He subsequently won elections for five consecutive terms, serving as Bathinda Municipal Corporation councilor in 1989, 1992, 1997, 2008 and 2015.
In 2021, he continued his winning streak for the seventh time, winning the MC election from ward no. 48 in Bathinda with 414 votes. With a clear majority, Jagroop Gill was the frontrunner and main candidate for the mayoral post in Bathinda MC. However, it went unnoticed and this became the reason for Jagroup’s withdrawal from the Indian National Congress in August 2021.
Earlier, he also held the posts of Chairman of Bathinda Improvement Trust, Chairman of Bathinda District Planning Board, Vice President and President of the civic body and President of the District Bar Association.
On 2 August 2021, Jagrup Singh Gill joined the Aam Aadmi Party in the presence of Harpal Singh Cheem, Jarnail Singh, Gurmeet Singh Heyer, Baljinder Kaur and Rupinder Kaur Ruby at the party office in Chandigarh.
During a press conference, Harpal Singh Cheema said that Jaggroup’s entry into AAP was a shot in the arm for the party in Malwa region. She said,
Gil was the president of the district lawyers’ association, as well as the president of the municipality council.
In 2022, he contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Bathinda Urban Assembly Constituency on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket. Jagroup won the election Manpreet Singh Badal (Congress candidate) by 63,581 votes.
After the victory, he addressed the media and said that instead of politics, he will work on strengthening the party. He also talked about changing the environment of the city. She said,
My priority is to free Bathinda from hooliganism and drugs. After the clouds parted, there is no place for hooliganism in Bathinda now. If anyone commits mischief, he will be dealt with severely.”
