Political career
In 2003, Poonam stood as a candidate against then Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from Gol Bazar Assembly Constituency and won the election. He served the BJP for 25 years as a spokesperson. He switched his party from BJP to AAP in November 2016, claiming that he had been ignored by the party for too long. In 2017, he again changed his party from AAP to Indian National Congress.

In 2016, when Poonam quit the BJP, she said that Arun Jaitley was responsible for not giving her a chance to get a ticket for the assembly elections. Speaking at the media conference about changing the party, he said:

Facts/Trivia
- During the 2003 assembly elections, Poonam went to observe a polling booth near the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, where she alleged that some Congress workers were beating up BJP workers. When he moved forward to end the fight, he was also attacked by Congress workers.
- Her husband, Kirti, had doubts and targeted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over the Delhi Cricket Association (DDCA) issue. Kirti was accused of violating party discipline and was expelled from the BJP.
- In 2016, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia gave a warm welcome to Poonam when she joined the AAP and quit the BJP. At the welcome press conference, he stated the reason for leaving the party. She said,
I see a future, especially for the youth, in AAP. The reason I left BJP is because we were treated badly by Arun Jaitley. Despite repeated promises, he did not give us voting tickets. Also, my husband Kirti Azad was suspended when he raised his voice against corruption. The BJP maintains a dual stance. “

- In 2017, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken welcomed Poonam when she quit AAP to join the Congress. He has an old relationship with the Congress party as his father-in-law, Bhagwat Jha Azad, was the Congress Chief Minister of Bihar. In a press conference, he announced the reason for leaving AAP and said:
I returned to the party that fought for India’s independence. I have had no personal problems in AAP. But there was a lack of organization. I did not fit their politics. I want to work with Congress and make it stronger.”
