Preneet started her political career in 1999 when she contested the parliamentary elections from Patiala Lok Sabha constituency. His party did not win the election, but he won a seat. In the next election, in 2004, the party won the election and retained the seat. During his tenure, he served as food, civil supplies and public distribution; empowerment of women; public enterprises; and water resource commitments. In 2007, Amarind Singh left the party and Preneet had to vacate the seat as well. He took office again when his party won the elections in 2009. During this period, he became the State Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2014, his party lost the elections and he had to give up his seat. In 2019, his party won the elections and continued to work as a minister of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
