Career
OP Soni’s career as a politician began when he was appointed as the Mayor of Amritsar. In 1997, OP Soni contested the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from Amritsar West region and won the election. After assuming his first post in 1997, OP Soni was appointed twice (2002 and 2007) from Amritsar West constituency. In 2009, OP Soni contested the parliamentary elections against Navyot Singh Sidhu, but he lost the election by a narrow margin of 6,858 votes. After serving three successful terms, OP Soni decided to cover more service areas and contested the 2012 Legislative Assembly elections from Amritsar Central. He won the election and in 2017 was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in the same constituency. In 2017, Captain Amarinder Singh was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab and OP Soni was ignored by him during the cabinet selection process. However, in 2018, OP Soni was appointed as the Minister of School Education. On 20 September 2021, Charanjit Singh Chan was appointed as the Chief Minister of Punjab and he further appointed OP Soni and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa as the two Deputy Chief Ministers and the swearing-in ceremony was held at Punjab Bhavan, Chandigarh. The ceremony was held in the presence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Navjot Singh Sidhu and party state in-charge Harish Rawat.

- In November 2016, several senior leaders of the Congress party, such as Captain Amarind Singh and Partap Singh Bajwa, accompanied the MLA to the Punjab Assembly Secretary’s office to resign. The move was made as a protest against the Supreme Court of India judgment in Satluj-Yamuna Link (YSL); The judgment was given in favor of the State of Haryana.
- After the 2009 parliamentary election results, OP Soni challenged the results in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and he also filed a defamation case against Navyot Singh Sidhu in Amritsar after Sidhu accused him of being involved in a drug-trafficking racket. Soni withdrew the case in 2017 when Sidhu joined the Congress party.
- In 2018, Captain Amarinder Singh ordered drug testing of all government employees. A campaign was launched to combat the drug problem in the state of Punjab. - During the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister selection, it was reported that Brahm Mohindra would be appointed as the Deputy CM; However, in the morning it was discovered that his name had been changed to Op-Son. Sources revealed that Sidhu had a role in the sudden change and OP Soni’s name was nominated for the change because of his closeness to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In 2017, during the selection meeting of the Cabinet Ministers, OP Soni’s name was personally proposed by Manmohan Singh for the post of Minister.
- In 2019, Captain Amarinder Singh replaced OP Soni and appointed him as Minister of Medical Education and Research, and in response, Soni decided to protest the decision and not assume the office for two weeks.
