Sukh Ram (1927-2022) was an Indian politician and agriculturist. He is known for serving as Minister of Communication and Information Technology from 1993 to 1996. He was also known as ‘King of Mandi’ and ‘King Maker of Himachal’.

Sukhram, also known as Sukh Ram Sharma, was born on Wednesday 27 July 1927 (age 94 at time of death) in Arnyana, Tungal (Kotli), Mandi, British Punjab Province (British India; now Himachal Pradesh, India). His zodiac sign is Leo. He went on to do his BA from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Later he did LLB from Faculty of Law, Delhi University, Delhi.

Career

After graduating from the Faculty of Law, he started practicing in the District Court of Mandi. In 1962, he became a member of the Territorial Council of Himachal Pradesh. He was a member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1963 to 1984. During this term it was the seat of the Mandi Assembly. In this capacity he also served as General Secretary, PCC(I), Himachal Pradesh. After that, he won the eighth Lok Sabha election and served as a junior minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government.

From September 1985 to October 1986, he was the Union Minister of State for Defense Production and Supply, and from October 1986 to February 1988, he served as the Union Minister of State for Planning. From February 1988 to December 1989, he was the Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies (Independent). In 1991, he was re-elected to the 10th Lok Sabha. From July 1992 to January 1993, Sukh Ram was the Minister of State for Planning and Program Implementation (independent charge) and the Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources. From January 1993 to May 1996, he took independent charge as the Union Minister of State Communications. He was re-elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996. It was he who introduced mobile phones to India. The first mobile phone call in India was made between Sukh Ram and Rajiv Gandhi. During the interview, he talked about it, he said:

I once went to Japan as the Minister of Telecom. I saw that the driver had a mobile phone in his pocket. Seeing this I felt that if Japan can have this technology then why not India.

After falling out with a Congress leader, he left the Congress and formed his own independent political party Himachal Vikas Congress on 6 July 1997.

In 1998, he formed a post-election alliance with the BJP and contested the assembly elections from Mandi Sadar. He won the election by a huge margin of 22,000+ votes. In 2004, his independent party joined the Congress. He announced his retirement from electoral politics in 2007. He joined the BJP in 2017 and left the party within two years to rejoin the Congress.

Imprisonment for misconduct

In 2002, it signed a contract with a Hyderabad-based firm to supply communication equipment, causing a loss of Rs 1.66 crore to the government. Then he was sentenced to three years in prison. In 2011, it had bagged a Rs 30 crore contract with private firm Haryana Telecom Ltd (HTL) to supply 3.5 million conductor kilometers (LCKM) of Polyethylene Insulated Jelly Filled (PIJF) cables to the Department of Telecom. He took a bribe of 3 million for this and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. During his trial in a Delhi court, he asked the judges to consider his old age before passing sentence. She said,

I (Sukhram) am an 86 year old man and have been attending court proceedings for the last 12 to 13 years. I am suffering from diseases related to old age and I lost my wife. Therefore, it can be a soft view. As such, this is not a case where the government has lost money. The CBI’s allegation was that he (Sukhram) took the bribe but did not cause any financial loss to the government exchequer.”

A CBI prosecutor said,

He is a “habitual criminal” and asked for the maximum sentence.

Speaking to journalists, Sukh Ram said:

Although age is not on my side, I have not lost hope for justice. I am a victim of a political conspiracy. My fight will continue until I leave the court clean.”

After he was sentenced to prison in a Delhi court, he was slapped and slapped by a man named Harvinder Singh. The incident took place in the court building of Delhi.

He breathed his last on 11 May 2022 at AIIMS, New Delhi. Earlier, on May 4, 2022, he suffered a brain stroke and was rushed to a hospital in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Given his deteriorating condition, he was airlifted to AIIMS, Delhi, where he was put on ventilator. On May 11, 2022, he had a cardiac arrest that he could not survive. The news of his death was spread by his grandchildren. His grandson Ashrei Sharma shared the information on Twitter. He tweeted,

The end of an era. Alvida dada ji abi nhi bjegi phone ki ganthi (Okay dada ji, now your phone won’t ring).
