Ravi Gangadhar Rana was born on Monday, April 28, 1980 (age 42; as of 2022) and he hails from Shankar Nagar, Amravati, Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Taurus. He finished school in 1998. After that he did Bachelor of Commerce from Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati, but he dropped out in his second year. Apart from being a politician, Rana is also a social worker and a farmer.

2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections

Ravi Rana contested the 2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Badnera Assembly constituency in Amravati district of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. He won the election defeating NCP candidate Sulba Khodke by 18,771 votes. The elections resulted in a coalition government of Congress and NCP with Ashok Chavan (Congress) as the Chief Minister.

2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections

Ravi Rana contested the 2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections as an independent candidate from the Badnera Assembly constituency. He won the election defeating Shiv Sena candidate Band Sanjay by 7419 votes.

Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Election 2019

Ravi Rana contested the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections as an independent candidate from Badnera Assembly Constituency. He won the election defeating Shiv Sena candidate Priti Band by 15,541 votes. He later offered unconditional support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the government in the state after the elections. However, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of BJP and SHS failed to form a government, after which Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress formed the Maharashtra government under a new alliance called Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with Uddhav Thackeray as Chief Minister.

Arrested during farmers’ agitation (2011)

In 2011, Rana was arrested and jailed in the Central Jail in Amravati for participating in a farmers’ agitation demanding better remunerative prices for raw cotton. Rana, along with his wife and Yuva Swabhimani Sanghatana, launched a protest against the government in support of increasing the minimum guarantee price of raw cotton from Rs 3,300 to Rs 6,000 per quintal. While in prison, he went on an indefinite hunger strike due to which his health deteriorated. CM Prithviraj Chavan’s emissary and Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane spoke to Rana over phone to convince him to end his fast, but Rana refused to relent.

Clash with Shiv Sena District Chief Dinesh Bub (2019)

After the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, Ravi Rana physically challenged Dinesh Bub, Shiv Sena’s Amravati district chief. According to reports, the leaders were attending a function at an old age home when Ravi Rana accused the Shiv Sena leader of using profanity while talking about his MP wife Navneet Rana. After that, the verbal altercation turned into a fight and both of them got in the way of each other. Soon the police intervened and forced Dinesh Bubi and his supporters to leave the ashram.

Booked for Violation of Lockout Norms (2020)

In 2020, Ravi Rana was arrested by the police for violating the COVID-19 lockdown norms to pay tributes to BR Ambedkar on his birth anniversary. Rana, along with five others, removed the barricades and stormed into Irwin Square, Amravati, where a statue of BR Ambedkar is erected. The police then invoked Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobeying an order duly issued by a public servant) against Rana.

House arrest under Section 144 CrPC (2022)

On 12 January 2022, Rana was arrested under Section 144 of the CrPC for installing a statue of Shivaji Maharaj at Rajapet Plateau, Amravati, on the occasion of Shivaji Maharaj’s mother’s birthday. Police Commissioner Arti Singh said Rana and his followers had illegally encroached on the flyover to install the statue. Following the incident, Yuva Swabhiman Party activists burnt an effigy of Amravati Municipal Commissioner Praveen Ashtikari in front of Rana’s house to protest the removal of the statue.

Accused of Attempted Murder (2022)

Ravi Rana was charged with attempted murder for the attack on the Municipal Commissioner of Amravati in 2022. Some women workers of Rana’s Yuva Swabhiman Party threw ink on Amravati Municipal Commissioner Dr. Praveen Ashtikar. Activists were apparently angered by the removal of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which was installed on the Rajapet Plateau in Amravati. Presumably, the statue was erected without seeking official permission from the municipal corporation; Accordingly, it was removed. Rana claimed that he was not present at the time of the incident; Therefore, he could not be held responsible.

Arrested in Hanuman Chalisa (2022)

On 23 April 2022, Rana and his wife, Navneet Kaur Rana, were arrested by the Mumbai police and sentenced to 14 days judicial custody by the local magistrate for chanting the Hanuman Chalisa outside the residence of Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray. The couple had earlier announced that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa in public if mosques continued to use loudspeakers for azaan and other announcements. Thereafter, the couple was booked under IPC Section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc. and committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony) and Section 135 (violation of police prohibitory orders) of the Mumbai Police Act. Later, the police also added Section 124-A (sedition) of the IPC in the case against them. The City Civil and Sessions Court granted bail to the couple on May 4, 2022 on bonds of 100 GEL. 50,000 each and ordered them not to talk to the media about the case.
