Career

business

Vijay Sankeshwar’s career as a businessman began in 1966 when his father gave him his first printing press, Vijay Printing Press, on his 16th birthday. It was a small setup with only one machine and two employees. At the press, Sankeshwar performed compositing, typesetting and proofreading. In 1969, at the age of 19, Vijay Sankeshwar modernized his printing press with modern machinery to expand his printing business. According to Vijay Sankeshwar, he had to borrow 1 million GEL from the bank to install modern machines in his printing house. Speaking about his printing press, he said:

My father didn’t want to send me to college after graduation. He wanted me to enter a printing house and settle down. So my father gifted me a printing press called “Vijay Printing Press”, it was a very small set up with only one machine and two employees. I took a critical decision to take the company to a new level and added some modern typewriters, which then cost one lakh.”

While expanding his printing business, Vijay established a transport business. Initially, he had only one truck, which he bought with a loan of 2 million GEL. Speaking about this, he said:

With little or no communication with the drivers as they hit the road, I had no idea when the shipment would reach the customer until the trucks were safely back at the warehouse. I have experienced heavy losses and frequent accidents to the vehicles I own. This failure did not bother me, I worked hard to achieve my goal.”

In 1978, Vijay Sankeshwar and his family moved to Hubballi to expand their transport business. In 1983, with eight owned trucks, the business was converted into a private limited company named Vijayanand Roadlines. By early 1990, his transport company had a fleet of 117 commercial vehicles and his company’s annual turnover was over 4 million GEL. Two years later, Vijay started courier delivery services and acquired more trucks in Karnataka. By 1996, he had bought four passenger buses that were used to transport passengers from Hubli to Bangalore and vice versa. In 2006, VRL Logistics Limited established a 42.5 MW wind power plant at Kapatguda in Gadag district, Karnataka. About this Vijay Sankeshwar said,

All my ventures have been entirely and undoubtedly based on trial and error. I took the maximum risk and was also proud of what I had done so far. We have never copied anyone in any of our business models. “

As of 2014, VLR Logistics Limited has over 5,111 vehicles, including 295 passenger vehicles and 4,816 goods vehicles. The Limca Book of Records mentions VRL as having the largest fleet of commercial vehicles by a single operator in the country’s private sector. The VRL Group conglomerate has various business operations apart from road transport and publishing such as VRL General Cargo, Vijayanand Travels, VRL Logistics Ltd., VRL Media Ltd. etc. , a Canadian television news channel. I have been associated with RSS for 52 years and it is much more than a mother to me. And I am not against RSS. But the manner in which he has been working for the last eight to ten years, especially with regard to the lack of transparency in the donations he has received and the way he has been dictating terms to the BJP, I am disappointed. “
