RESIGNATION INC
On 24 January 2023, Anil Anton posted a tweet opposing the screening of a controversial documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots, India: A Modi Question, on the grounds that the BBC’s exposure of Indian institutions undermined Indian sovereignty. In a two-part BBC documentary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was shown in a bad light. The documentary was removed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which called it a “propaganda film that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.” The central government’s move drew sharp criticism from opposition parties like INC and TMC for imposing censorship. The documentary was scheduled to be screened at the Congress district headquarters on Republic Day 2023 due to its undeclared ban in the country. Anil’s tweet read,
Despite major differences with the BJP, I think the (Indian) BBC, a state-funded channel (allegedly Indian) with a long history of prejudice, and Jack Straw, the mastermind behind the Iraq war, a view of (Indian) institutions that dangerously prioritize, undermine our sovereignty.
Following this, Anil was criticized by members of his party for his remarks, which were perceived as supporting the BJP, and he received threatening calls to retract the tweet, but he refused to do so. The next day, Anil resigned from the Congress party and shared a copy of his resignation letter on Twitter, which read:
I quit my roles in @incindia @INCKerala. Intolerant calls for the tweet to be revoked by free speech campaigners. I refused. A @facebook wall of hate/insults by those who support the hike to promote love! Hypocrisy is your name! Life goes on. The resignation letter is redacted below. “
