Amrit Singh is an American human rights lawyer of Indian origin who directs the Project on National Security and Counterterrorism at the Open Society Justice Initiative. In 2006, he made headlines for campaigning against the Bush administration’s disdain for civil liberties. She is the daughter of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Career
From September 2001 to August 2002, he served as a trial law clerk in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Singh began his legal journey in July 2002 when he was admitted to the New York State Bar Association. That same year, he joined the nonprofit American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as a staff attorney for the Immigrant Rights Project; He served at the ACLU until 2009. There, he handled immigrant rights and national security cases, such as the post-9/11 attacks. He filed papers asking a federal judge to release all records in their possession to the White House, the FBI and other government agencies related to the 2005 destruction of two videotapes by CIA agents, as well as a summary of the records and transcripts. The tapes showed the harsh interrogation of two US detainees, Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashir. From May 2011 to July 2014, Singh served as counsel for Al-Nashir in the European Court of Human Rights proceedings against Poland and Romania. In October 2002, al-Nashir was arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and secretly transferred to CIA custody, whereupon he was tortured in secret CIA prisons. On April 20, 2011, United States military commissions prosecutors indicted him and announced that they intended to seek the death penalty in his case. Singh’s efforts led to a verdict in favor of Al-Nashri, handed down on 24 July 2014. He co-authored The Torture Administration: A Documentary Record from Washington to Abu Ghraib and Beyond (2009), which argued that the Bush administration condoned the 9/1 terrorist attack. In 2006, he was also recognized for his work in the Ali vs Rumsfeld case, which was brought before the US Secretary of Defense v Rumsfeld on behalf of Iraqi and Afghan prisoners who had been tortured in US custody. In September 2009, he joined the Open Society Foundations’ Justice Branch in New York as Senior Legal Officer. Open Society Foundations (OSF) is a grantmaking network founded and chaired by business magnate George Soros. OSF provides financial support to civil society groups around the world that aim to promote justice, education, public health and independent media. At the Open Society Justice Initiative, Singh conducts strategic litigation, documentation and advocacy on human rights issues related to counter-terrorism measures such as challenging extremism, restrictions on freedom of expression, extrajudicial killings, rendition, torture and arbitrary detention. He also oversees projects on economic justice, anti-corruption and freedom of information, association and assembly, and the Justice Initiative’s Freedom and Transparency Division. In 2012, The Globalization of Torture: The CIA’s Secret Torture and Extraordinary Reprisals, a report by Amrit Singh, published by the Open Society for Justice Initiative, gained international media attention for revealing a global network of torture.
In February 2016, he was promoted to Director of OSF’s Accountability Division. In the same year he wrote Eroding Trust: UK’s Prevent Counter-Extremism Strategy in Health and Education
Among other cases, he was a trial lawyer seeking responsibility for the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed on October 2, 2018, at the Saudi consulate by agents of the Saudi Arabian government, allegedly on the orders of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He also successfully challenged Egypt’s emergency law, torture and arbitrary detention practices before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He has served as visiting lecturer at Yale Law School and New York University. In 2022, he moved to London, where he started working as visiting faculty at the Institute of Transnational Law, King’s College London. In April 2015, he wrote Death by Drone. The report casts serious doubt over whether President Obama has followed through on a 2013 pledge he made before any US drone strike that “there must be near certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured.”

- In 2013, US resident Inderjit Singh, a member of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), alleged that as India’s finance minister, Manmohan Singh funded several counter-insurgency operations in Punjab in the 1990s that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Sikhs by security forces. Therefore, SFJ filed a motion for leave to allow the summons of his daughter Amrit Singh, who is a permanent resident of the United States, to the defendant by alternative means. Judge James Boasberg in the District of Columbia allowed subpoenas to be served on Amrit Singh in a copyright infringement suit in 2014.
