Shyam Charan Murmu (1958-2014) was an Indian bank officer who died of cardiac arrest. He is famous for being the husband of the 15th President of India, Draupadi Murmu.

Shyam Charan Murmu was born on Tuesday 1 April 1958 (age 56 at time of death) in village Pahadpur, Badampahar (Mayurbhanj), Odisha, India. His zodiac sign is Aries. He graduated from Rama Devi College, Bhubaneswar.

While Shyam was studying at Rama Devi College, he met Draupadi Murmu, who was pursuing his graduation from the same college. At first they became friends and soon fell in love. According to sources, in 1980 he met Draupadi’s parents to discuss his marriage with Draupadi. According to reports, Biranchi Narayan Tudu (Droopad’s father) rejected Shami’s proposal and upset Droupadi. Later, Shyam Charan along with his relatives and friends came to Draupadi’s house to convince Draupadi’s father to agree to his marriage proposal. He even stayed there for three or four days. After persuading Draupadi’s father, Shyam and Draupadi got married in 1980. In an interview, Shyam’s uncle spoke about Shami and Draupadi’s marriage, he said,

Draupadi belongs to the Santal tribe, in which the dowry usually comes from the groom’s side, and at the time of their marriage, it was decided that the bride’s side would give 1 bull, 1 cow and 16 pairs of clothes to the bride’s side. Draupadi and Shyam’s marriage featured a red-and-yellow village chicken feast. In the next marriage, it was done like this almost everywhere.”

Later, Draupadi Murmu started working as a teacher. Draupadi started her political career in 1997 and on 21 July 2022, she was elected as the 15th President of India, defeating Yashwant Sinha in the 2022 Indian Presidential Election.

In 1984, the couple was blessed with a daughter, who died at the age of 3. The couple then had two sons named Laxman Murmu and Sipun Murmu and a daughter named Itishree Murmu who works as a banker. On 25 October 2009, Laxman Murmu, who used to live with his uncle and aunt, died under mysterious circumstances, and on 2 January 2013, Sipun Murmu died in an accident.
