Priyank Kharge is an Indian politician and member of the Indian National Congress (INC). He was elected from Chittapur Assembly constituency for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2018. He is the son of Indian politician Mallikarjun Kharge.

Priyank M Kharge was born on Wednesday, 22 November 1978 (age 44; as of 2022) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He went on to PUC MES College, Malleswaram, Bengaluru (1996-1998). He later obtained a Diploma in Graphics (Graphic Design) and an Advanced Diploma in Animation (Animation, Interactive Technology, Video Graphics and Special Effects). Kharge began his political journey in 1998 as an activist of the National Students Union of India (NSUI). In 1999, he became the General Secretary of NSUI College. From 2001 to 2005, he served as General Secretary of NSUI Karnataka.

Political career

In 1999, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC). He was the Secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress from 2005 to 2007, General Secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress from 2007 to 2011 and Vice President of Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress from 2011 to 2014.

2009 Karnataka Assembly By-Elections

Priyank Kharge contested and lost the Chittapur Assembly seat in the 2009 Karnataka by-elections. BJP candidate Valmiki Nayak won the seat defeating Kharge by a margin of 1,606 votes.

2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Elections

In 2013, he contested and won the Chittapur Assembly seat, defeating BJP candidate Valmiki Nayak by 31,191 votes. In 2016, he was the youngest minister to take oath in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet. From July 2016 to April 2018, he was the State Minister for Tourism, Information Technology and Biotechnology.

2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Elections

In 2018, he contested and won the Chittapur Assembly seat, defeating BJP candidate Valmiki Nayak by 4,393 votes. He served as Minister of Social Welfare in the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy from 8 June 2018 to 23 July 2019.

In 2011, Kharge came under the public’s attention, according to his statement, 4000 sq.m. ft plot in HSR Layout allotted to him by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) under Congress leader N. During Dharam Singh’s tenure as Chief Minister. He made this statement after media reports about allocation of G-category sites for politicians and their relatives. After securing the plot at a throwaway price. He spent 8.57 Lari to build a commercial building on it. His request was sanctioned by BDA Commissioner Bharat Lal Meena. When responding to the media on why he wanted to exchange the plot with Patil, Kharge said that “it was a mutual exchange”. An embarrassing remark about women

Speaking at a press conference in 2022, Kharge said that men “have to pay bribes to get government jobs in Karnataka, while “young women have to sleep with somebody”. The remark sparked controversy and drew sharp criticism from BJP Karnataka, which demanded an apology from him. BJP Karnataka tweeted,

Thousands of women, talented, educated, work hard, pass many exams and get a job. Priyanka Kharge, won’t so many women be insulted because of your words? Apologize immediately.”

  • In 2011, Priyank Kharge’s sister, Priyadarshini Kharge, hit the headlines with 3280 sq. ft. of land which he purchased on January 15, 2002, allegedly in violation of the society’s bye-laws. In 2002, Mallikarjun Kharge served as Home Minister in the Congress government under SM Krishna. He secured a plot for Rs 1,96,837 in Yelahanka (Allalasandra) Judicial Layout and its market value was in crores. In view of the allegations, he returned the Karnataka State Judicial Department Employees’ House Construction Cooperative Society in 2011. Taking advantage of Priyadarshini’s land would be in direct violation of Article 10 of the model bye-laws relating to the rights of HBCS members. Clause-10(B) reads: “He/she in the case of employees’ housing society is an employee of the organization for which the society was organized and has rendered at least five years continuous or intermittent service in Karnataka.” Priyadarshini was not eligible to become a member as he is a doctor by profession and the land was reserved for court employees.
