He came into limelight after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in January 2022. Nida Khan runs a non-profit organization called Ala Hazrat Helping Society in Uttar Pradesh for women victims of Nikah Halala. She experienced triple talaq or instant divorce from her husband within five months of marriage.

Nida Khan and her husband Shiran Raza Khan got married on February 18, 2015. Shiran Raza Khan’s family are descendants of the Ala Hazrat clan of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The Barelvi movement was started in South Asia by Ala Hazrat, a Sufi scholar, between 1870 and 1890. Nida was in her final year of her Masters when she got married to Shiran Raza Khan. Soon after her marriage, she was asked to marry Mamulishvili by her husband and suffered a triple talaq or instant divorce by her husband within five months of their marriage. According to Nida Khan, her relatives convinced her before marriage that they would allow her to pursue further education after marriage. However, her husband forcibly took her out of the exam hall in front of the teachers and policemen for the final exams. No one had the courage to stop Shiran Raza Khan from publicly humiliating his wife because Shiran Raza belonged to a famous family of Uttar Pradesh. Later, she started experiencing domestic violence and once had a miscarriage. Soon, on July 17, 2015, she became a victim of triple talaq or instant divorce and was forced by her relatives to practice Nikah Halala. However, she refused and left her son-in-law’s house.

Fatwa against Nida Khan

Mufti Khurshid Alam, the Shahr Imam, issued a fatwa against Nida Khan in July 2018 for rebelling against Islamic practices, particularly the triple talaq or instant divorce system. Soon after the social boycott fatwa was issued against her, Nida Khan told a media house that India is a democratic country and if anyone wanted to issue a fatwa, then they could move to Pakistan. She said,

Those who issue fatwa should “go to Pakistan”. “India is a democratic country. No one can separate me from Islam. Only Allah can decide who is guilty.”

The fatwa issued against Nida Khan states:

If he gets sick, he will not be given medicine. If he dies, no one is allowed to offer namaz at his ‘Janaza’ (funeral procession). After his death, it is impossible to bury him in Kabritani (cemetery).

According to the fatwa, Nida Khan was to leave the country in 3 days and whoever cut Nida Khan’s hair would be paid a monetary reward of 100 GEL. 11876.

Nida Khan entered politics in January 2022. He got the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket shortly before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Nida Khan appreciated the work done by Yogi Adityanath’s ministry for the safety of Muslim women in Uttar Pradesh and she said in a BJP press conference that women were safe under the Yogi Adityanath government. he stated

Triple talc was a turning point in my life that’s why I support BJP. BJP has done a great job in bringing the law against triple talaq. It seems other parties are just giving slogans for women empowerment and women safety but only BJP has proved it.”

  • Soon after the divorce, Nida Khan wrote a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asking him to abolish the practice of triple talaq. He also stated in the letter that he does not believe in the practice of instant divorce in Islam. After the instant divorce, Nida Khan was forced to do Nika Halala training. In Nika Halala, Nida Khan had to marry her father-in-law and son-in-law and end that marriage so that her ex-husband could remarry. However, she was against practicing the same and was thrown out of the house by her son-in-law.
