In 2019, Amol Kolhe entered politics and contested the Indian general election on a Nationalist Congress Party ticket from Shirur district in Maharashtra. He won the election and defeated Shivajirao Adalarao Patil of the Shiv Sena Party by a huge margin. Amol Kolhe was appointed as a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture on 13 September 2019. He was appointed on October 9, 2019 as a member of the Committee on Documents on the Table.

In January 2022, Amol Kolhe caused controversy when it was announced in the media that he portrayed Naturam God in the film Why I Killed Gandhi. He was criticized in the media by NCP leader and minister Jitendra Awadh and Congress state unit president Nana Patole for his character in the film. In an interview with a media reporter, Amol Kolhe said that he started working on the film in 2017, but due to some reasons, the film got delayed. He continued that he was not involved in active politics in 2017.
I worked on this film in 2017, the release was delayed due to various reasons. When I played this role, I was not active in politics. In my personal life, I have never supported the ideology of Godos, nor do I intend to support it. As an actor, I just play.”
Soon, NCP chief Sharad Pawar came out in support of Amol Kolhe and his character in the film. Sharad Pawar in a conversation with Mediahouse said that Amol was portraying the role of God only as an actor. He also added that playing the characters of Ravana and Aurangzeb in the films did not claim that the actor was a follower of their ideology. She said,
We all must look at Kohlhe’s role in the film as an actor. The actor played Gode in Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi”. Even in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj film, some actors played the role of Aurangzeb. They’re just actors.”
