Party positions held

Narendra Singh Tomar served as the president of the BJP Youth Forum in Gwalior from 1980- 1984. In 1983, he took charge as the councillor in the Municipal Corporation, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He served as the Pradesh Mantri of BJPYF in Madhya Pradesh for 2 years, 1984, and 1985. In 1986, he took charge as the State Vice-President of BJPYF in Madhya Pradesh. In 2006, he preceded Satyanarayan Jatiya to become the state party president of BJP in Madhya Pradesh.

In 1998, Narendra Singh Tomar contested the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from the Gwalior constituency on a ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party and defeated his nearest rival Ashok Kumar Sharma by a margin of 26,358 votes. In 2003, he was re-elected as an MLA from the Gwalior constituency and was appointed as a cabinet minister in the government of Madhya Pradesh. In November 2023, he contested the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from the Dimani constituency on a ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party and defeated his nearest rival Balveer Singh Dandotiya by a margin of 24,461 votes.

In January 2009, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh constituency through a by-election; the seat from Madhya Pradesh was left empty due to the passing away of Laxminarayan Sharma who earlier held the seat. In May 2009, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Morena constituency on a ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party and defeated Ramniwas Rawat of the Indian National Congress by 1,00,997 votes. He was then re-elected to the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha from Gwalior and Morena constituencies in 2014 and 2019 respectively.

On 8 December 2003, he took charge as a cabinet minister in the government of Madhya Pradesh in which he served as the minister of various departments such as the Department of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, the Department of Public Relations, the Department of Fisheries, and the Department of Animal Husbandry. In May 2014, Narendra Singh Tomar preceded, Sis Ram Ola to take charge as the Minister of Labour and Employment, Beni Prasad Verma to take charge as the Minister of Steel, and Dinsha Patel to take charge as the Minister of Mines in the Modi government.

Tomar and his son involved in illegal transactions

In November 2023, a video of Narendra Singh Tomar and his elder son, Devendra Pratap Singh Tomar, went viral on social media in which his son was seen discussing transactions of hundreds of crores involving some mining and land businessmen from Rajasthan and Mohali. The opposition demanded a probe into the matter by the income tax department, the CBI, and the ED to confirm the authenticity of the video.
