Amritpal Singh Sandhu was born on Sunday, 17 January 1993 (age 30 years; as of 2023) in village Jalupur Khera, Baba Bakala, Amritsar District, Punjab, India. After studying up to class 10, he reportedly enrolled in a polytechnic course at Lord Krishna Polytechnic College, Kapurthala, Punjab, but did not complete the course and moved to Dubai to work in the family’s transport business. Some sources, including his LinkedIn account, claim he has a bachelor’s degree in engineering; However, some reports found him suspicious and referred to him as an engineering dropout.

On the seventh anniversary of Behbal Kalan’s murder, at Tibbi Saheb Gurdwara in Faridkot, Amritpal Singh Sandhu announced that he believed Sikhs were the “slaves” of Hindus and that “Sikh rule” would be the only solution to end slavery. On the seventh anniversary of the Behbal Kalan killings, when police officers opened fire on people protesting the sanctity of the Guru Granth Sahib in the village of Behbal Kalan, Amritpal Singh said:

Sikhs have been slaves for 150 years. We have developed a slave mentality. First we were slaves of British and now we are slaves of Hindus. The only way we can be completely free is when we have Sikh rule.”

Transport business in Dubai

In 2012, Amritpal moved to Dubai, where he ran the family’s transport business, working for Sandhu Cargo Transport. On 20 August 2022, Amritpal Singh, after leaving the family business in Dubai, returned to India to take charge of Waris Punjab De.

Amritpal Singh is the head of Waris Punjab De, an organization formed by Punjabi actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu to fight for social justice and preserve Punjabi rights and culture. He took charge of the organization after the death of Deep Sidhu on 15 February 2022 in a road accident near Sonepat on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal highway. However, she never met Deep Sidhu but connected with him on social media. According to reports, Deep Sidhu’s brother Mandeep Sidhu has alleged that Amritpal has illegally entered the leadership of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group. In an interview, Mandeep Singh mentioned that Deep Sidhu never talked about him and somewhere he didn’t like him. He claimed that Deep had blocked Amritpal’s number in his phone. Commenting on Amritpal’s appointment as head of Waris Punjab De group, Mandeep Sidhu said:

One gets the impression that Deep Sidhu has trained Amritpal and our family is part of the decision to appoint Amritpal as the head. However, this is not true. In fact, Deepi never spoke about Amritpal and seemed to dislike him. He blocked Amritpal’s phone for 15 days in January and February.”

House arrest in the case of the murder of Sudhir Suri

Following the murder case of state-based Shiv Sena (Taxal) Sudhir Suri, who was shot dead on November 4, 2022, during a protest outside the Gopal Mandir in Amritsar, the Home Ministry has reportedly told the Punjab government to monitor the activities of Amritpal Singh, who was arrested in Spthaba village. According to sources, Sudhir Suri’s family blamed Amripal for his death. However, Amripal was kept under house arrest for security reasons. According to reports, around nine surveillance cameras were placed on the lanes connecting his two houses in the village to keep an eye on him.

Protests erupt as religious sentiments are hurt

In 2022, a group of Christian community members gathered for a four-hour protest against Amritpal Singh at PAP Chowk in Jalandhar, Punjab. The protest was in response to Singh’s derogatory remarks about Jesus Christ, which were considered offensive to religious sentiments. During a public speaking event, Singh made an uncomfortable statement, saying:

Jesus, who could not save himself, how can he save others?’

The protesters demanded that an FIR be registered against Singh under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with intentional and malicious act of hurting religious sentiments and inciting communal disharmony.

Calling for arrests for seditious acts and pro-Khalistan tweets

On 2 October 2022, Hani Mahajan, president of the Shiv Sena, demanded the arrest of Amritpal Singh on charges of promoting seditious activities and forming a separate Sikh state, similar to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the infamous militant leader of the Sikh organization Damdami Taksal. On 7 October 2022, Amritpal Singh’s Twitter account was banned for his pro-Khalistan tweets. Following this, the Home Ministry directed the state government to closely monitor Amritpal’s activities, indicating scrutiny and concern over his activities.

Amritpal Singh’s Instagram account was globally deleted in December 2022 for unknown reasons after he was banned by Twitter.

Waris Punjab De destructive protest

In December 2022, members of the Waris Punjab De group, led by Amritpal Singh, reportedly set fire to the furniture of a gurdwara in Biharipur village in protest against the arrangement of gurdwara sites. The incident took place during their visit to various gurudwaras in Punjab. Singh questioned the practice of keeping chairs in the room where the holy book was kept, saying it was against the Sikh Rehat Maryada, which outlines the code of conduct and conventions of Sikhism. An argument ensued between Singh and members of the Gurdwara Management Committee, which resulted in a destructive act.

On 18 March 2023, Amritpal Singh was on the run after the Punjab Police launched a crackdown on him and his supporters. Later, while talking to the media, the police said they arrested many persons associated with Waris Punjab De (WPD) and recovered nine weapons, including one .315 bore rifle, seven 12 bore guns, one revolver and 373 cartridges of different calibers.

The National Security Act was used against him

On 21 March 2023, during the hearing of a habeas corpus plea filed by Waris Punjab De legal counsel Iman Singh Khara in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab government informed the court that the government had invoked the National Security Act against fugitive Amritpal Singh.

Arrest at a Gurudwara in Punjab

Amritpal Singh was arrested by the Punjab Police on 23 April 2023 outside a Gurudwara located in Rode village of Moga district in Punjab. Before his arrest, Amripal reportedly addressed his followers at the gurudwara claiming that all the cases against him were fabricated and that he was determined to fight against each and every one of them. She said,

I may be guilty in the court of the world, but I am not guilty in the court of God. After one month I decided that I will continue to fight here, I am facing all fake cases against me here… Today I decided to surrender. My arrest is not the end, it is only the beginning. If God helps me, all the false cases against me will be dismissed.”

  Our family is very religious. When Amripali got away from her, we didn’t like it. He told us that he and another boy, his classmate, were planning to cut their hair. While Amripali was cutting his hair, the boy ran away. We are very happy that he has now taken Amrit (holy water).
