Syed Zafar Islam is a politician and former investment banker. Syed joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 5 April 2014 after being inspired by Narendra Modi’s politics. He is one of the prominent Muslim leaders of the party.

Syed Zafar Islam was born in 1971 (age 49 years; as in 2020) in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, India. He completed his schooling in Hazaribagh and then pursued his BSc and MSc from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. He subsequently pursued a Ph.D. from Delhi University and then went to IIM Ahmedabad for an Executive MBA degree.

Zafar’s father late Syed Nayeem Ahmed was a small businessman and he ran his own clothing store. After his death, Saeed’s brother Shahbaz Khan ran the shop. He also has another brother, Syed Zubair Ahmed, who works for the BBC as a news correspondent in Delhi.

Career
Syed Zafar Islam completed his formal education at IIM Ahmedabad and then started working at Deutsche Bank for almost 15 years. He worked as a finance director at Deutsche Bank before deciding to enter politics. Zafar admired Narendra Modi’s politics and the way he worked. He then decided to join the BJP and became the party’s national spokesperson in 2014. In 2017, he became a non-official director of Air India.
Facts/Trivia
- Apart from the banking sector and politics, Syed was also good at sports and he represented Aligarh Muslim University as the captain of the cricket team.
- Syed Zafar is close friends with Jyotiraditya Scindia and Zafar is said to have played a major role in bringing Scindia into the BJP. Scindia decided to quit Congress in 2020 and he joined BJP.
- With Scindia joining the BJP, officials noticed Syed’s dedication to the party’s growth and elected him unopposed for the Rajya Sabha seat lying vacant from Uttar Pradesh.
- In 2013, Syed Zafar Islam faced a housing crisis when his apartment in the center of the island, Mumbai, developed a sewage problem, leaving his fifth-floor apartment flooded. As they say, the price of the apartment is about Rs. 9 million on the ground. The project was undertaken by Bombay Realty (a real estate extension of Bombay Dyeing) but they ignored his issue when challenged.
