He initially played rugby (Australian Football) for Under-16 and later for the Under-18 team of Flinders Park Football Club and scored more than 100 goals in the 2014 season. Domestic

Spencer Johnson was selected for the South Australia Under-19 in 2013 and played for them from 2013 to 2015. He played for West Torrens Cricket Club (also known as West Eagles) in the 2014-15 season in the West End Premier Cricket Competition.

Before the 2017-18 season, he was given a contract by South Australia (also known as West End Redbacks) and played for them in the 2017–18 JLT One-Day Cup; however, he suffered a stress fracture injury in the talus bone at the top of the ankle joint which forced him to take rest for several months.

He played for South Australia Under-23 in the 2018-19 season and South Australia Second XI from 2019 to 2023. He made his first-class (FC) debut in the 2022-23 Sheffield Shield Tournament against Victoria. In early 2023, he was training under the retired Australian bowler, Jason Gillespie after signing a contract with West End Redbacks till 2026.

Adelaide Strikers acquired him for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 BBL seasons; however, he did not play any match for them. He was later picked by Brisbane Heat for the 2022-23 BBL season and made his BBL debut for them on 11 January 2023 against Perth Scorchers.

  • His batting style is left-handed, and his bowling style is the left-arm fast seam. His bowling speed mostly comes over 145 kmph (90 mph). His fastest ball speed is around 150 kmph.
  • He said in an interview that had he not been a cricketer, he would have become a firefighter.
  • Spencer Johnson also runs a home turf business with his brother and was working as a landscape gardener 18 months before he was picked by Gujarat Titans in the IPL auction in 2023.
  • In 2017, he suffered a career-threatening injury as he could not run. He had a stress fracture in his ankle and underwent two surgeries over the next two years. When his injury did not heal after operations, his doctor suggested an operation that included putting in a couple of screws; however, Johnson was fearful as that doctor was the best foot doctor in Sydney but he had not conducted such an operation ever in his life. His body rejected the screws after which the whole healing process was started again.

  • His maternal grandfather moved from Italy to Australia when he was young due to which Spencer Johnson is half-Italian as well. There were rumours in 2023 that he would represent Italy in the 2022–23 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier Tournament for the T20 World Cup in 2024; however, he later played for Australia and did not play for Italy.
