Sanjay Jha was born in Gangtok, Sikkim; However, his ancestors hail from Bihar. He completed his schooling from Bishop’s School, Pune in 1974. Sanjay has been an all-rounder since his school days. He was not only good at sports but also excelled in studies and won several prizes and awards for his academic excellence and knowledge. He graduated with honors in Economics from Fergusson College, Pune in 1980. While studying at Ferguson College, Sanjay was also elected as the head of the Drama Society. He completed his graduation in Economics from the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, University of Pune and then a PhD in Economics from Patna University. He also did his MBA in HR from XLRI – Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur in 1986 and then went into the corporate world and then into politics.

Corporate career
Sanjay Jha started his career in the sales department of Bharat Petroleum and worked there for two years. He served as a vice president at Alliance Capital, a mutual fund company, from 1993 to 1996. He then worked for another mutual fund company, ITC Threadneedle plc, as Senior Vice President for one year. While there, he contributed to the launch of a joint investment mutual fund company in partnership with BAT plc, London. His interest in the sport encouraged him to launch cricket news website CricketNext.com in 2000. The venture was later sold to Network 18 Media Group in 2012. In 2003, he joined Dale Carnegie, a personal and professional training platform, as the CEO of its India operations. He is responsible for business strategy, market development, building reputation capital and achieving the company’s financial goals and metrics.
Political career
Sanjay Jha, a Gandhian-Nehruvian idealist, joined the Indian National Congress in 2012. He served as the national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress (INC) from 2013 to 2020 and represented the party in various televised debates and panel discussions.
He was sacked as the INC’s national spokesperson in June 2020, days after Sanjay’s opinion criticizing the INC’s leadership and internal democracy was published in the English newspaper The Times of India.

He also served as the President of Indian Professionals Congress (Maharashtra) for three years before resigning in July 2020.

Sanjay Jha has been embroiled in a lot of controversies and most of them were due to his political posts on social media. Here are some of them.
- On 25 April 2014, Sanjay Jha posted a tweet claiming that Sanjay Swamy was a CIA agent after WikiLeaks claimed that Swai had tipped off an American diplomat in 1977 about Indira Gandhi’s deteriorating health.
