Saavan Kumar Tak (1936–2022) was an Indian film director, screenwriter, producer and lyricist. He has mainly worked in the Hindi film industry and is best known for directing superhit films like Saajan Bina Suhagan, Souten, Souten Ki Beti, Sanam Bewafa and Bewaffa Se Waffa. He is credited with making nineteen films in Bollywood. On 25 August 2022, he died of a heart attack at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

Relationship with Meena Kumari
According to Saavan Kumar, he was in love with veteran Indian actress Meena Kumari when he was in the early days of his career in the Bollywood film industry. He was then in his thirties. In an interview with Mediahouse, he revealed that he experienced the tragedies of Meena Kumar’s last days at close quarters. She said,
Roses and handsome men could not take away her tragedies.”
In the same discussion, Saavan Kumar added that she was attached to him. He said he once took her to her bedroom and told her mime stories of her life and couldn’t stop laughing all night. She said,
But I was hooked on it. One night he took me to his bedroom. She had the image of a tragedy queen, but was actually an excellent mimic. I couldn’t stop laughing at the stories he told. Then she spread rose petals on her bed and slept. I sat on the carpet and fell asleep leaning on the bed. When I left the room the next morning, Khurshid Appa asked me sarcastically, “Did you sleep well?”
Saavan Kumar went on to say that Meena Kumar was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and he nursed her, took the bloody vomit in her hand, wiped her face and put her to sleep. Meena Kumar also noticed all his love and care and once she told Saavan Kumar that he was like a god to her. Meena Kumari said,
You are the first person in whom I saw God. You collect in your hands the blood that I draw. Not even once do you show displeasure. No one has ever done that for me.”
Sawan Kumar Tak, then an aspiring director, offered emotional support to Meena before she sold her bungalow to finance her film.
According to some media sources, Meena Kumar and her husband separated in 1960 and divorced in 1964 due to several men in her life, including filmmaker Saawan Kumar Tak. He was one of the men who brought Meena Kumar to them in the late thirties. She was attracted to him when he was in his thirties and she was in her late thirties.

Saawan Kumar Tak was the one who launched veteran Indian actors Sanjeev Kumar and Mehmood Jr. aka Naeem Syed into the Indian film industry. Once he saw Sanjeev Kumar’s performance in a theater and promised to cast him in his first film. In 1967, he made his first film Naunihal starring Sanjeev Kumar. In the same year, this film won several awards and accolades from the Maharashtra government. Saawan Kumar was the one who gave the name Sanjeev Kumar to actor Harihar Jethalal Jariwala. He then released the film Gomti Ke Kinare in 1972 which started in 1968. The film featured veteran actresses Meena Kumari and Mumtaz. The film’s songs were composed by music director RD Burman. The long delay in the release of the film was due to the untimely death of Meena Kumar. It was his last film and was released after his death.

In 1983, he directed the film Souten, which was a platinum jubilee hit at the box office. The film is directed by Saavan Kumar in Mauritius and stars Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim and Padmini Kolhapur.

He wrote and composed songs for his films. In his movie Souten, the famous song “Zindagi Pyar Ka Geet Hai” was sung by him. He is known for composing famous Hindi songs like ‘Barkha Rani Zara Jamke Barso’ for the 1973 film ‘Sabak’ starring veteran actors Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Dhillon. He later wrote the popular songs “Hum Bhool Gaye” from the movie Souten Ki Beti and “Yeh Dil Bewafa Se Wafa” from the movie Bewaffa Se Waffa and legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar gave voice to these songs. In the 2000s, she was recognized for the superhit films Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai and Dev. He was a close friend of Indian actor Salman Khan and worked with him in the films Sanam Bewafa in 1991 and Chand Ka Tukda in 1994.

Saavan Kumar Tak died on August 25, 2022 at the age of 86 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India after a prolonged illness. Soon after his death, his Prof. Mantu Singh announced in a media interview that Saawan Kumar Tak had been suffering from a heart problem for two days. Mantu Singh said,
Savan Ji was 86 years old. He was not married. He had a heart problem for two days. After which he was taken to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital. He died of a heart attack at around 16:00 today.”

- According to Saavan Kumar Tak, he moved to Mumbai from Jaipur, Rajasthan in 1967 to become an actor in the Bollywood film industry. However, it was rejected by two or three film studios in Mumbai and the same remained disappointed. This prompted him to move to another side of the entertainment industry and decided to work as a producer. He then asked his sister to take a loan of Rs. He was paid 25,000 to make his own film, but he refused to borrow the money. After that, he was helped by his brother-in-law who gave him some money to start his career in Bollywood.
