Ram Chandra Prasad Singh is an Indian politician and former national president of the Janata Dal (United) political party. Before joining politics, he worked as an IAS officer. In 2021, during the Prime Minister’s cabinet reshuffle, Ram Chandra Prasad was appointed as Steel Minister by Narendra Modi.

Ram Chandra Prasad Singh was born on Sunday 6 July 1958 (age 64; as of 2022) in Mustafapur, Nalanda, Bihar. His zodiac sign is Cancer. public service
After completing his formal education, RCP took the Civil Services Examination and passed in 1984. In 1984, he joined the Indian Administrative Service and was first appointed as the Joint Magistrate of Sultanpur District. Three years later, he was appointed Chief Development Officer for Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat. Five years later he became the Collector and District Magistrate of Barabanki, Hamirpur, Fatehpur and Rampur. For almost a year, RCP Singh was appointed as Private Secretary to former Posts and Telecom Minister Beni Prasad Verma. He then served as Private Secretary to Nitish Kumar, who served in the Ministry of Railways, Agriculture and Surface Transport, for nearly seven years in the state government. In 2004, Ram Chandra Prasad was appointed as the Additional Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Noida Authority, working under the supervision of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. In 2005, Nitish Kumar was appointed as the Chief Minister of Bihar while Ram Chandra Prasad Singh served as the Principal Secretary to the CM of Bihar. In 2010, Ram Chandra Prasad Singh took VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme) from the Indian Administrative Services.

After his early retirement, Ram Chandra Prasad Singh began his political journey by joining the Janata Dal (United) in 2010. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha and served as a member of the Standing Committee on Railways and as a member of the Advisory Committee on Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs. He was appointed as the General Secretary of the party and later appointed as the National President of Janata Dal (United) from 27 December 2020 to 31 July 2021. During the reshuffle of Narendra Modi’s cabinet, RCP Singh was appointed as the Union Cabinet Minister for Steel on 7 July.
On 6 August 2022, he resigned from the Janata Dal (United) amid allegations of corruption, for which the party sent him a show-cause notice.

Facts/Trivia
- According to several media reports, Ram Chandra Prasad was a close aide of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Reports also suggest that Ram Chandra accepted the VRS on the advice of Nitish Kumar and joined the Janata Dal (United) in 2010.
- Ram Chandra Prasad is known to be a quiet and reserved person and is considered a “man of few words” by other party members. He was given a key role in the party and appointed General Secretary of Janata Dal (United).
- In December 2019, when a majority of MPs opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act, Ram Chandra Prasad defended the act. During the Parliament session, Prashant Kishore, the then national vice-president of the Janata Dal (United), opposed the act.
- Although it lobbied hard for a Union Cabinet berth from the BJP-JDU alliance, the BJP won the Lok Sabha elections with a majority, insisting that the party’s allies should get “token representation”. This decision of BJP forced Nitish Kumar to withdraw support from BJP.
- After losing JDU as an ally, BJP lost Shiv Sena which made them realize that it would be impossible for BJP to win elections in Bihar and Maharashtra where politics was dominated by caste. The BJP reconsidered its decision and decided to give Ram Chandra Prasad Singh due respect and offered him a post in the Narendra Modi cabinet during the reshuffle.
- Ram Chandra’s daughter, Lippi Singh, broke the news when police forces, acting on Lippi Singh’s orders, opened fire on a group of people who were on their way to immerse an idol of Goddess Durga. This incident resulted in one death and several people were injured, after which many people protested against Lippi Singh and demanded his removal. Following this, the Election Commission suspended Lippi Singh from the post of district SP.
