Facts/Trivia
- In 2019, Radhabai Kharge and Mallikarjun Kharge were criticized by the Karnataka BJP unit for entering a polling station together to vote. The BJP has also filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Mallikarjun Kharge, stating that,
The code of conduct mandates that only one person should go to the election machine to vote in order to maintain secrecy. The Returning Officers Manual also warns of taking extra care to protect the secrecy of the vote.”
- In 2011, Radabai Kharge’s daughter Priyadarshini Kharge made headlines with a 3280 sq.ft. ft. of land which he had acquired on January 15, 2002, allegedly in violation of the bye-laws of the society. In 2002, Mallikarjun Kharge served as Home Minister in the Congress government under SM Krishna. He secured a plot for Rs 1,96,837 in Yelahanka (Allalasandra) Judicial Layout and its market value was in crores. In view of the allegations, he returned the Karnataka State Judicial Department Employees’ House Construction Cooperative Society in 2011. Taking advantage of Priyadarshini’s land would be in direct violation of Article 10 of the model bye-laws relating to the rights of HBCS members. Clause-10(B) reads: “He/she in the case of employees’ housing society is an employee of the organization for which the society was organized and has rendered at least five years continuous or intermittent service in Karnataka.” Priyadarshini was not eligible to become a member as he is a doctor by profession and the land was reserved for court employees.
