A political strategist

Prashant began his career in Indian politics in 2011 when he strategized for Narendra Modi in the 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections, which saw Modi appointed as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He went on to work for Narendra Modi and started an election campaign group called Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG) in 2014, which worked for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as well. The campaigns he did for the BJP in the elections included Chai Pe Chacha discussions, 3D rallies, Vote for Unity and Manthan. After working hard to defeat Modi in two elections, Prashant was offered the position of Minister of State in the PMO by Narendra Modi, but he declined the offer. He quit working in BJP due to some issues with Amit Shah.

In 2015, he changed the name of his group from Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG) to Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC). In 2015, Prashant started working for Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) and won a seat in the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. Nitish offered Prashant to become a party advisor and he joined the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) as the party’s vice-president on 16 September 2018. He quit the party on 29 January 2020 after being expelled from the JD(U) for his statements against Bihar Kumar Chief Minister Nitish.

As I have said many times before, PK and his team and their work was absolutely crucial to our victory in Punjab!”

In 2016, Prashant worked for the Indian National Congress in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, but the Congress party failed to win the election. Many politicians commented on Prashant and said that he should have worked for the BJP and not the Congress because the BJP had won elections in Uttar Pradesh for twenty seven years. In 2017, he was the political advisor of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party, which won 151 out of 175 seats in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections. As you know, given my decision to take a temporary break from an active role in public life, I have been unable to take on the responsibilities of your chief advisor. As I am still undecided about my future course of action, I am writing to ask you to relieve me of this responsibility.”

Prashant resigned as a political strategist in 2021. In an interview, he talked about it and said:

I don’t want to keep doing what I’m doing. I’ve done enough. Time to take a break and do something else with my life. I want to leave this space.”

confrontations

  • Prashant’s loyalty begs the question: In 2019, Prashant was a political strategist of the JD(U), but at the same time, he offered his services to the Trinamool Congress for the 2021 assembly elections. Many politicians criticized Prashant for his loyalty to one party. In an interview, Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, who belongs to the JD(U), said:

We have nothing to do with his activities in West Bengal. We don’t even know what kind of services his company will provide in the neighboring state.”

  • Endorsing Narendra Modi: In 2021, Prashant courted controversy when he praised Narendra Modi in an audio clip shared by BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya. In the audio clip, he said that PM Narendra Modi and CM Mamata Banerjee are equally popular. This audio was released by the BJP when Prashant was Trinamool Congress’ political strategist for the 2021 assembly polls. In an interview, Prashant responded to this by saying:

Am I glad that BJP is taking my chat more seriously than the words of their own leaders!? They should have the courage to share the full chat instead of getting excited about selectively using parts of it. I have said it before and I will say it again – BJP will not cross 100 in the World Bank. period. I also said BJP will not cross 100, why are they not playing it? I knew it was a public platform. “
