Career

He was a right-arm batsman and right-arm bowler during his cricket career. He played five first-class games for his Ranji team Hyderabad and Hyderabad Blues in the Moin-Ud-Dowlah Gold Cup tournament from 1965 to 1969. Apart from cricket, he was selected as the assistant manager of the Indian team for the tour of Pakistan in 1978. According to experts, this tour was more political than cultural. The cricket tour is just being used as an excuse. Later it was decided that the manager of the Indian team should be a politician. This responsibility was then handed over to the Maharaja of Baroda. But the Maharaja has a request that he joins the Indian team as manager only if Man Singh is my deputy. Sharing his experience at Wisden, Man Singh said,

Facts/Trivia

  • After India won the 1983 World Cup, Man Singh wrote a letter to the then editor of Wisden, David Frith, belittling the Indian team, saying he would “eat his words” if India won the tournament, reminding him of his promise. Later in September, an edition of Wisden magazine was published in which David Frith was seen eating his words with a caption.

  • He was part of the six-member selection committee that appointed Kapil Dev as the captain of the tournament. During his time as the team’s full-time manager, he ignored several board rules to support his players. He allowed four of his players to accompany their wives on tour. Also, he allowed them to take their wives on tour. He also allowed them to be taken by bus when going out of London. PR Man Singh recalls that time with a speech

“We had four players with their wives and I let them stay in the hotel. I was also allowed to travel on the team bus when traveling to venues outside of London. It was incredible then. It’s good that today the board allows players to bring their families for some time.

“Honestly, I can’t think of any other Indian who is so deeply involved in cricket globally and his personal museum at his residence is testament enough to the insane intensity of his cricket. He is the warmest cricketing person.

  • Man Singh once debunked the myth of a break in coverage between India and Zimbabwe during the 1983 World Cup due to the BBC strike. She said,

“Just because the BBC is on strike, the India-Zimbabwe match will not be televised, it is wrong. This match had no meaning. The BBC only concentrated on matches involving West Indies, Pakistan, England and Australia. It was played at Tunbridge Wells – the only international game ever played. I am not surprised that it was not on TV. Let’s not blame the BBC. It became very big because we were 17-5 and suddenly Kapil went and made 175 and we won the match.”

  • The first book he bought was “End of an Innings” by Dennis Compton. This book was published in 1950 in Bangalore (now Bengaluru). He also has a collection of ties, memorabilia, flags, cufflinks, autographed miniature sticks and several video cassettes that have now been remastered on DVD.
