Nitin Menon represented the Madhya Pradesh team in List-A cricket. He played two matches in the Ranji One-Day Trophy; Madhya Pradesh vs Vidarbha on 8 January 2004 and Madhya Pradesh vs Uttar Pradesh on 9 January 2004. He also played in the Under-16, Under-19 and Under-23 categories.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Nitin became a State Panel Judge in Madhya Pradesh in 2005. He cleared the BCCI All-India Umpiring Exam in 2006 and started umpiring domestic matches in the 2007-08 season. He made his international debut on 26 January 2017 during a Twenty20 match between England and India at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. It was part of England’s tour of India, a 3-match series which India won 2–1. Nitin took over as the TV (third) umpire on the second day of the series.
Nitin made his ODI (One Day International) debut on 15 March 2017 during the match between Afghanistan and Ireland at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground. He oversaw as the TV umpire the second day of the 3-match series. On 27 November 2019, Nitin made his Test debut in the Afghanistan vs West Indies match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, becoming the 62nd Test match umpire for India.
In October 2018, Nitin was selected as one of the 12 umpires for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20. He also refereed on the pitch during the Indian Premier League 2019. However, during the 2021 season, he had to go midway because his mother and wife tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. In February 2020, the ICC (International Cricket Council) appointed her as the match supervisor for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
In June 2020, at the age of 36, Nitin was promoted to the elite panel of the ICC. He replaces England’s Nigel Long and becomes the third Indian umpire to join the panel. During his selection, he said in an interview:
It is a great honor and pride for me to be named in the elite panel. To officiate regularly alongside the world’s leading referees and umpires is something I have always dreamed of and the feeling has yet to sink in.
Menon was praised by the cricket fraternity for his umpiring during England’s tour of India in March 2021.

He has a dream to play in The Ashes as an umpire, which has come true in June 2023; He led the streak from day three. In an interview, he said:
I am also very excited about it because it has been my dream. I couldn’t do the front ash as it happened during COVID. So I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully I’ll do my best there.”
