Confrontation

Controversial decision at the 2019 World Cup

In July 2019, Dharmasena was selected as one of the two umpires for the Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand. His controversial decision to give England 6 runs instead of 5 put him at the center of criticism. The match ended in a draw and even the super-over ended in a draw. England eventually won the cup by scoring more boundaries, resulting in a shock loss for New Zealand. Later, Dharmasena admitted the mistake and said in an interview:

I agree it was a lapse in judgment when I see it on TV now. But we didn’t have the luxury of a TV replay on site and I don’t regret the decision I made. So I spoke to the leg referee (Erasmus) through a communication system that all the other referees and the match referee can understand. Although they can’t check the TV replay, they all confirmed that they completed the second run with the sticks. That’s when I made the decision.”
