Nandana Sen is an Indian-American actress, children’s rights activist, author, producer and screenwriter. She appeared in many famous Hollywood and Bollywood films such as Black (2005), The War Within (2005) and Rang Rasiya (2008). Nandana is the daughter of renowned Indian economist and Bharat Ratna awardee Ammartya Sen.

Nandana Dev Sen was born on Saturday, August 19, 1967 (age 56; as of 2023) in New Delhi, India. His zodiac sign is Leo. Nandana lived in Delhi and London for several years as a child. After his parents’ separation, he moved to Kolkata with his mother at the age of six. Sen completed his schooling in Kolkata. Although he attended an English medium school, he preferred Bengali as his primary language and enjoyed reading classical Bengali literature.
After graduation, he moved to the United States of America (USA) for higher education. There he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. He later enrolled at Harvard University, where he earned a master’s degree in English literature. In the interview, he talked about the reasons for moving to the USA and said:
I didn’t want to choose a country that we were colonized by. I wanted to choose a country that I didn’t feel bad for. That’s how I got to America. I really loved being at Harvard, I loved studying literature and studying with great writers like Seamus Heaney and Toni Morrison. [taking] The film classes with Spike Lee were just wonderful. It couldn’t have been more fun.”
In his first year at Harvard, Nandana won the Detur Prize for being the leader of his class. He won the John Harvard Fellowship and the Elizabeth Curry Agassiz Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. During his junior year, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor society.
After graduate school, Nandana enrolled at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles, California, where she took a filmmaking course under the Peter Stark Producing Program and directed numerous short films, including her final project, Arranged Marriage, which was screened at many international film festivals. He later took acting courses at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in New York and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He also holds a Ph.D.

After receiving her master’s degree from Harvard University, Nanadana Sen was offered a job at Ms Magazine, a New York-based feminism magazine. However, he turned down an offer to work with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, an educational company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There he worked as an editor and edited many books, including The Riverside Shakespeare and The Best American Essays. Nandana is the author of many books including Kangaroo Kiss (2016), Jumble Farm Talky Tumble (2017), Not Yet! (2017), The Monkey Who Wanted to Fly (2018), In My Heart (2019), The Quake of Youth (an anthology of books for adults), Make Up Your Mind (a translated collection of Bengali poetry by Nabaneeta Dev Sen) and Acrobat.
Acting, producing and writing the screenplay
Nanadana Sen made her Bollywood debut with the 1997 film Gudiya, in which she essayed the role of Rosemary Braganza/Urvash. In an interview, Nandana talked about her first film and said that she initially turned down the offer to act in the film because she wanted to help the director make the film. He also added that the director agreed to his request on one condition, that is, if he would play the lead role in the film. He spoke about it and said:
During my studies, I accidentally picked up gutta ghose in Gudia. I wanted to help him, but I was shocked when he said he wanted to play my role. He said, ‘I’ll let you help me if you agree to be my main character.’ And I made my film debut. ”
In 1999, he starred in two films, an Italian film called Branchie and a Canadian film called Forever. She played the role of Maarya in the Canadian English drama Seducing Maarya in 2000. He also worked as an associate producer in the film.

Apart from writing books and acting in films, Nanadana Sen is also involved in children’s activism. While studying in Kolkata, Sen collected food and clothes for poor and marginalized children. At Harvard University, he participated in many domestic violence and pro-abortion marches. She served as Child Protection Ambassador for Save the Children, India. She later worked with many organizations involved in child activism such as UNICEF, RAHI (India’s first organization for survivors of child sexual abuse) and Apne Aap (aims to prevent intergenerational prostitution). Sen has served as an expert panelist on child rights and as an adjudicator at the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

In 2006, during the filming of Rockin Meera!, Nandana was accused of inappropriate behavior on the sets. However, Nandana denied the claim and said that he had misbehaved on the sets of the film, as a result of which he stopped shooting and returned to Los Angeles from India. She also stated that Param Gill, the film’s producer, was impressed with her acting skills. In an interview, he talked about it and said:
I am shocked because there is not a single fact that is true about my involvement with Rockin Meera! Obviously, the journalist’s source is completely unreliable. I don’t want to discuss why I didn’t make the film because it’s uncomfortable. The main person involved in the film behaved extremely unprofessionally. His behavior was shockingly inappropriate, violated all laws of professional and personal ethics, and made me extremely uncomfortable.”
