Bob Christo (1938-2011) was an Australian-Indian civil engineer and actor. Bob also served as the Official Director of Health and Fitness at the Sanjay Khan Resort in Bangalore. He acted in more than 200 films and television serials in Bollywood, Mollywood, Kollywood and Tollywood, including films such as Qurbani (1980), Nastik (1983), Mr India (1987) and Gumraah (1993). He is known for bringing the stereotypical foreign goon to life on screen. Bob Christo died on March 20, 2011 of a ruptured left ventricular valve.

Bob Christo was born Robert John Christo in 1938 (age 73 at time of death) in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Bob finished school and studied theater in Germany. Bob traveled the world before coming to India. First, he completed a civil engineering degree in Sydney and was part of the Australian Army and had an assignment in Vietnam where he led a team of mercenaries and built bridges. After that he ended up in South Africa. Bob’s work and life have taken him from Hong Kong to Japan to the Seychelles. His membership in the Australian Army led to him serving in the Special Air Services in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In Zimbabwe, Bob read an article about Parveen Babi in Time magazine that inspired him to meet her. He arrived in India and was waiting for a work permit in Muscat, so he had to leave Muscat before the permit was processed. Instead of leaving, he found himself in Bollywood after trying to meet Parveen Babi and worked in more than 200 films in the Indian film industry.

In Bobby’s autobiography, Flashback: My Life and Times in Bollywood and Beyond, he talks about the countless relationships and affairs he has been in throughout his life. While Bobby was in the Philippines preparing the set for Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, he was simultaneously having an affair with Kisa, a Polynesian student, and a Filipina woman named Marie Antoinette. Maria and Bob had twin daughters together, and Bob even promised to marry her. However, instead of fulfilling his promise, he skipped town. He also admitted to sleeping with his maid Reena in Mumbai, an affair that happened many times before he became an actor.

Bob Christo’s first film role was when he was 16 years old and he acted in a German film after working at the National Theater in Dusseldorf, Germany. He stayed in the film industry, using his civil engineering degree to build a jungle palace on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979). He found himself in Mumbai, where he played the role of a villain in the Hindi film Abdullah (1980), where he played the role of a “witch”.

Although this was the first film in which he acted, other films like Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978) and Qurbani (1980) came before him. He has since appeared in more than 200 films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, and has always been cast as a bald, evil foreigner. Since then, he has starred in films like Kaalia (1981) and the cult classic Disco Dancer (1982), where he played the role of an ‘international hit man’.

Before Sanjay Khan discovered him and cast him in the film Abdullah, Sanjay Khan also gave him roles in the television series The Sword of Tipu Sultan (1990), in which he portrayed General Mathews, and The Great Maratha (1994), in which he played the role of Ahmed Shah Abdal, who became an icon among the show’s viewers. He also appeared in a French television show called La Nouvelle Malle des Indes (1981), which translates to The New Malle of India.

Bob Christo died on March 20, 2011, at the age of 73, of a left ventricular rupture at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore, where he had been admitted for a heart attack. At the hospital, he suffered another heart attack, which led to his death.
