Naba Kishore Das was an Indian politician who retained the assembly seat from Jharsuguda constituency for three consecutive terms, i.e. in 2009, 2014 and 2019. On 29 January 2023, while on his way to an event, Kishor was shot multiple times by an assistant at Choshornadhha in Goshrapal (Assistant, GSSI) in Harsuguda district, Odisha. After suffering from gunshot wounds for several hours, he breathed his last at Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Naba Kisor Das was born on Sunday 7th January 1962 (age 61; at time of death) at Mirgamunda, Maneswar Block, Sambalpur District, Odisha. His zodiac sign was Capricorn. He attended Mudipada Upper Primary School, Sambalpur and Government High School, Bhojpuri, Sambalpur. Kishore enrolled at Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) in Sambalpur, Odisha where he obtained four degrees namely Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), Master of Arts in English (MA) and Master of Commerce (M.Com).

Career

While attending Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) in Sambalpur, Kishore Das developed an interest in politics and joined the Students Federation of India (SFI). He was elected Student Union President at his college. Later, he left SFI Party and joined Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) and held the post of Vice President of Odisha National Students Union of India (NSUI) party.

2004 City Council elections

Kishore Das contested the election as Indian National Congress candidate from Jharsuguda constituency and was defeated by Biju Janata Dal Party candidate Kishore Kumar Mohanty.

2009 City Council elections

Kishore contested from Jharsuguda constituency on an Indian National Congress party ticket and defeated Kishore Kumar Mohanty, the Biju Janata Dal Party candidate by 22,516 votes.

2014 City Council elections

Kishore was re-elected to the Jharsuguda Assembly seat as the Indian National Congress candidate, defeating Kishore Kumar Mohanty, the Biju Janata Dal Party candidate by 11,563 votes.

2019 parliamentary elections

Kishore Das resigned from the Indian National Congress (INC) party on 16 January 2019 and joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party. He contested from Jharsuguda constituency and defeated Dinesh Kumar Jain, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, by 45,699 votes. Kishore was sworn in as the Health and Family Welfare Minister on 29 May 2019 in the Naveen Patnaik government.

On 14 December 2015, during the Odisha Assembly session, Naba Kishore Das was caught watching pornographic content on her mobile phone by a television camera. On 15 December 2015, he was accused of defaming the assembly and was eventually suspended from the Odisha Assembly for a week. On the contrary, Naba Kishore has claimed that the allegations are baseless and said that while surfing the net, an adult content page accidentally appeared on his phone screen. She said,

I was scrolling through my phone when I accidentally tapped the YouTube app and this clip popped up. The video is on YouTube. The company sent me, and I did not consciously choose it.”

In December 2018, Kishore was acquitted of the charges against him due to lack of evidence to support the charges.

On 29 January 2023, Kishore, while on his way to inaugurate a party office in Brajrajnagar, Jharsuguda district, Odisha, was shot dead by an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) rank police officer, Gopal Das. When Kishore got out of his car to meet supporters at Gandhi Chowk, Gopal shot him several times with his service revolver. Kishore, who sustained gunshot wounds on the left side of his chest, was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where he was immediately treated. After several hours of injury, Kishori was declared dead by the hospital staff. In a statement released by Apollo Hospital, stating the cause of his death, it said:

During surgery, it was determined that one bullet had entered and exited the body, damaging the heart and left lung and causing massive internal bleeding and damage. The lesions were repaired and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given emergency medical care. But, despite great efforts, he could not revive and succumbed to his wounds.”

However, Gopal’s motive behind Kishiori’s murder was not revealed by the police officials. Kishore Das was cremated with full state honors on January 30, 2023 at Kherual village in Jharsuguda district of Odisha.

However, he dismissed these rumors as baseless and said that he offered an urn full of mustard oil and donated 10 million GEL to the temple.
  • In an interview, Gopal Das’s wife Jayanti Das spoke about her husband’s mental health and revealed that Gopal suffered from mental disorders and had been receiving treatment for his condition for the past eight years. She said,

    I heard the news, then what can I say? How can I say why this step was taken? I haven’t talked to you since morning. He spoke to my daughter on a video call at 11am this morning but suddenly hung up. His mental condition was not good and he was taking medication at the same time. He was taking medicine for the last 8 years. After taking the medicine, he behaved well.”

    However, according to some media sources, it was reported that Gopal Das was suffering from bipolar disorder, a health condition that causes extreme changes in mood, energy levels and behavior.
