He studied at Utpal Shangvi School till class 7 and later joined St. Columba’s School in Mumbai. Growing up, he was a state and national figure skating champion. One day, when he was 11 years old, he sprained his ankle while skating, after which he had to take a year off from the sport. During this break, at his father’s suggestion, he tried his hand at cricket. At that time, Gujarati Mid-day, a news daily from Mumbai, conducted a recreational cricket competition for housing societies. The gala community also formed a team and Harley was a part of it. His performance in the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) tournament caught the attention of the Mumbai cricket selectors. He scored a hat-trick with the ball in the semi-finals of the MSSA tournament and then scored over 30 in quick time in the final.
