Gowtam Tinnanuri made his debut in 2017 with the movie ‘Malli Rava’. He, with no prior experience in the industry, approached film producer Rahul through a friend. It took him a long time to write the script of Malli Raava. The film featured the romantic story of Karthik and Anjali, who crossed paths to be by each other’s side. The film was a huge success and Gautam Thinnauri earned recognition for his work. Talking about the great success of his first film, he said:
I was totally clueless as to what was going to happen as I had no previous experience. I felt that I had a good story, I told it, the producer liked it and decided to make it. It all happened quite quickly. Even a few days before the release of the movies, I was completely blank; I didn’t know what to expect. If you say something to a gathering of 20 people, maybe five people won’t like it. Imagine going to a million people and expecting them to unanimously like something. It is a huge task. And the market was slow on the first day, so I thought I had to learn more to reach a wider audience. But at the end of the first day, he took it. Then I made sure that there is a certain part of the audience that I can communicate with. “
Then, in 2019, he wrote and directed the Telugu-language sports drama film Jersey, starring Nani, Shraddha Srinath and Sathyaraj. The plot of the film follows Arjun (Nani), a talented but unsuccessful cricketer who chooses to return to the sport in his 30s, motivated by a desire to represent India and to satisfy his son’s longing for a shirt as a gift. The film was released on 19 April 2019 under the production of Zee Studios. The film Jersey was released as a commercial success and became one of the highest grossing Telugu films of the year. According to the director, he studied enough before writing Jersey and took some time off before the adventure, which allowed him to spend time with his family and friends. Gautam Thinnaur received critical acclaim for his work as both writer and director of the film. About the preparations before writing the jersey, during an interaction with the media, he said,
I wanted to tell an underdog story. You’ve probably heard of the concept of child prodigies. These are people born with extraordinary abilities and achieve success at a very young age. There is another concept called late blooming; These are the people who realize their dreams at a later age and achieve success. I wanted to focus on the following of these concepts. Jersey is the story of someone who is rejected by the whole world, but still has a dream. Cricket is just a platform for this story. I chose sports because in other fields like business there are skills, age is not a barrier. Age is definitely a barrier in sports because it depends a lot on physical fitness, speed, etc. In Jersey, those around Arjun saw him play when he was young and knew he loved cricket, but not later.

Many people compared his film Majeel to Jersey and claimed that the subsequent film was quite similar to the previous one. People also raised doubts about his directorial abilities. - Goutham Thinanur spent six years of his life in Chennai. During this period he learned about editing, mixing and DI etc. He was very familiar with the technicalities of filmmaking at that time.

It was a fantastic experience working with everyone on the film. I had not even met Nani before Malli Raava. I saw him shooting once when I drove by. The second time I saw him was when I narrated the script to him. The most important thing for me is to be in sync with someone, they have to be able to understand the ideas I’m trying to convey. I discovered this at the first meeting with Nani. But I could not tell whether he liked the story from his expressions; He looked completely blank during the narration.
