Diewald Brewis was born on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 (age 19 years; as of 2022) in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was educated at the Hoer Seunskole Afrika in Pretoria, which was also the alma mater of de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Jacques Rudolph, Heino Kuhn, Neil Wagner and Kruger van Wyk. In an interview, Diewald revealed that he has always been a fan of cricket and started playing it in his backyard with his older brother and father.

Career
DeWald Braves is a right-arm batsman and leg-spinner who has been a part of teams such as Mumbai Indians, Northern Under-13s and South Africa Under-19s. He was signed by the Northerners ahead of the 2021–22 domestic cricket season in South Africa in April 2021. He made his Twenty20 debut for South Africa under-19 in the 2021–22 CSA Provincial T20 Knock-Out Tournament on 8 October 2021. He scored 5 runs off 41 balls with four strikes. In November 2021, he was included in the South African squad for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. He had an exemplary performance in the tournament as he scored two centuries and three half-centuries, two of which fell short of 3 and 4 runs after the century. He scored a total of 506 runs in six innings, beating Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 505 runs in seven innings. He also managed to take seven wickets. Although South Africa could only make it to the quarter-finals of the tournament, Braves was named the best player of the tournament. He represented the Titans Cubs at CSA Cubs Week in February 2022 and scored 0, 25, 41*, 58 and 62 at an average of 46.50. The IPL auction started nine days after his last World Cup innings. Its base price was Rs. 20 lakh and was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3 crore.

Prior to the IPL, Braves had only played 8 T20 matches in his career, scoring 204 runs and taking 5 wickets. Not part of the playing XI for Mumbai Indians’ first two matches, Braves made his IPL debut on 6 April 2022 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Pune. He scored 29 runs off 19 balls. He took the wicket of Virat Kohli on the first delivery of the IPL, after which he thrashed Punjab Kings for 49 runs off 25 balls. Braves made Rahul Chahar’s trophy the most expensive of Chahar’s IPL career with 170 overs, hitting four consecutive sixes for a total of 29 runs. As of April 2022, he has maintained a strike rate of 155 in IPL 2022.
Confrontation
During the match between RCB and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022, Braves dismissed Virat Kohli on his first delivery in IPL, forcing Virat to miss his first fifty of IPL 2022 by just 2 runs. Dewald hit a googly which hit Virat on the pads. The on-field umpire called it, after which Virat applied DRS, which was to no avail. This angered Kohli and he expressed his anger by smashing his stick on the ground. This caused an uproar in the media and among fans. However, after the match, Virat met Braves and told him:
A young man. It’s good, eh! It’s a good first meeting, take me to the first ball.

Once AB de Villiers visited Braves School which is also AB de Villiers’ alma mater. Brewis heard him talk about his experiences and little anecdotes. When it was time for AB to leave, Braves mustered up the courage to ask him for his number, and to his surprise, AB gave him his number. Considering the passion Braves had for cricket, AB decided to teach him cricket tips and tricks. He also helped the Braves improve their game by carrying the net together. According to reports, AB even went to Brewis’ house to help him train. AB went from her idol to her mentor. In an interview, Braves expressed,
I always wore my AB de Villiers shirt that my mother made for me. [I just love] How does he play? He has a great mindset and loves to entertain people. I was the same since I was a kid – I wanted to have fun and put on a big show when I crashed.
He added,
AB is someone I look up to and if I can play just 10 percent like him I’ll be happy. I love it.”
Interestingly, Braves’ SA U19 jersey also featured the number ’17’ on its back, which was once the number De Villiers donned on his ODI debut for the Proteas in 2005. In an interview, he revealed:
I met AB for the first time at Affies and we kind of had a relationship ever since. Then I asked if I could play with number 17 [shirt] And he said, of course, play. you are excellent”

- According to Braves agent Weber Van Wyk, his dream is to play for the Proteas. In an interview he said,
“His dream is to play for the Proteas and playing in South Africa is very important to him.”
- Brewis has become the subject of a non-fungible token (NFT), a unique digital asset that represents real-world objects such as art, music, in-game items, and videos that are often bought and sold online with cryptocurrency. Brewis’ NFT is a clip of him launching England’s Tom Perst over long six in the U19 World Cup quarter-final in Antigua.
