Flee to Sri Lanka in the midst of the Sri Lankan crisis
On 12 July 2022, Yoma Rajapaksa fled the country with his wife Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid violent protests over the economic crisis. Many sources claimed that the couple fled the country to the Maldives on a Sri Lanka Air Force Antonov An-32 aircraft. From the Maldives, the couple traveled to Singapore, and from there the couple moved to Thailand. In August 2022, there were many reports that Yoma and Gotabaya might return to Sri Lanka in the first week of September as they were granted visas for Thailand for only 90 days. The media also reported that another reason for their return could be the unsustainable amount of money required to live in an expensive place like Thailand with 24/7 VVIP security around them.

- In July 2022, when a mob stormed the presidential palace, they found cash worth 17.85 million rubles (about $50,000) belonging to Yoma and Gotabaya. The participants of the demonstration handed over the money to the Sri Lankan police. This was announced by the police spokesperson.
The cash was taken by the police and will be presented to the court today. The cash found was in good condition and contained mostly new banknotes.
