Basavaraj Somappa Bommai, popularly known as Basavaraj Bommai, was born on Thursday, 28 January 1960 (age 61 years; as of 2021) in Hubli, Mysore State (now Karnataka) in India. His zodiac sign is Aquarius. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from BV Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, India.

Career

After completing his formal education, Basavaraj Bomai started working for the Pune division of Tata Motors as a mechanical engineer in its manufacturing plant. He worked there for three years and then decided to go on his own and start his own business. In 1998, Basavaraj decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and began his journey in politics by joining the Janata Dal party. However, the party began to disintegrate in 1999 and in 2003, Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal decided to merge his party with the Lok Shakti Party and the Samta Party to form the Janata Dal (United). He was then elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from Dharwad constituency. While a member of the board, he was appointed to the post of former Karnataka Chief Minister J.H. Patel as political secretary. Bomai left the Janata Dal (United) Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2008. He was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on behalf of Shigaon constituency. He was appointed as Minister of Water Resources from 2008 to 2013 in the Government of Karnataka. In 2019, BS Yediyurappa served his fourth term as the Chief Minister of Karnataka and during this time Bomai was appointed as Minister of State for Home Affairs, Minister of Cooperation and Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs in the Government of Karnataka. On 26 July 2021, BS Yediyurappa resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officials suggested Basavaraj Bomai’s name for the post. On 27 July 2021, Bomai was sworn in as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka.
