Veena George is an Indian politician and former journalist. He is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and became the Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Kerala in 2021.

Veena George was born on Tuesday 3 August 1976 (age 46; as of 2022) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He completed his schooling from Mount Bethany High School in Mylapra, Pathanamthita district, Kerala. She completed her post-graduate studies in Physics from Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He completed his BA from the University of Kerala. He was a member of the Students Federation of India (SFI), a communist student union during his college days. He worked as a teacher at Catholic College, Pathanamthita for a year before switching to journalism. He entered politics after 16 years of work as a journalist and anchor. In 2016, Veena was nominated as the CPIM candidate for Aranmul state assembly constituency and emerged victorious in her debut election. In 2021, he replaced KK Shailaja as Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the second Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government.

Career

Veena George worked briefly as a teacher before becoming a journalist. He became one of the best journalists in Kerala and won many awards during his 16-year career as a journalist and anchor. Veena George was nominated as the candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and won the 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections. In his second term as an MLA, Veena was appointed as a minister in the second Pinarayi Vijayan government.

Veena George started her journalistic career in 2000, when she became an intern journalist at “Kairal” TV station. She then joined Manorama News and established herself among the popular anchors of Kerala. Vienna presented morning shows and special international shows. Veena then joined Indiavision and was part of the channel for a while before joining Reporter TV. In 2015, she made history when she became the first woman executive editor of a Malayalam news channel when she joined TV New. Vena George has published various articles related to journalism.

He was a member of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), during his college days. Veena suddenly entered mainstream politics in 2016 when she was declared as the CPI(M) candidate from the Aranmul state assembly constituency in Pathanamthita district. He defeated senior Indian National Congress (INC) leader K. Sivadasan Nair with 7646 votes in his debut election. He contested the 2019 Indian general election from the Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha seat and came second in a highly competitive election against INC and BJP candidates. Veena retained her seat in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections and improved her margin of votes to 19,003.

He was nominated as Minister of Health and Family Welfare by the CPM Politburo in 2021; Her back-to-back victories in the Legislative Assembly elections from the INC stronghold and the excellent leadership and organizational skills she displayed during the Pathanamthita floods in 2018 and 2019 were the main factors that convinced the party leadership that Veena had the best profile to replace former minister KK Shaila. Veena and the Kerala Council of Ministers assumed office on 20 May 2021. Vena made history when she became a minister; Kerala’s first female journalist-turned-politician has been appointed as a minister.
