In his initial days, he represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and took crucial wickets for the side. He also played for the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. The reason for choosing Bengal was that Mumbai had a strong batting line-up, so it was difficult for him to secure a place in the side. However, there were plenty of vacancies for batsmen in Bengal. He also played for the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. In 2001-02, he was selected as the captain of the Bengal national team, but did not succeed in this role. In 2003, in an India A tour match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, he scored 139 runs to win his side by seven wickets. He was later dropped from the Pakistan tour. He was again picked for the Videocon Trophy and England tour where he was ineffective with both bat and ball. In 2007, he joined the Indian Cricket League (ICL) for the Kolkata Tigers, but the league was later declared unauthorized by the BCCI. He was soon amnestied by the BCCI in 2009 along with 70 other players. After returning to domestic cricket, he joined the Kolkata Raiders in the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His last first-class game was in 2009, however, he retired on 9 February 2021. After retirement, he joined the commentary panel with his father. He has commented on the 2013 IPL season and shows on Star Sports’ Star Power. In 2017, he became the media director of the Port Elizabeth franchise.
