Rusty Farooq was born in Lahore, Punjab province, Pakistan. After graduation, Rusty joined the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore. Passionate about acting since childhood, Rusty participated in various school plays and debates. In an interview, he talked about it and said:
I remember when I was very young, I always wanted to be on stage. I participated in debates and skits at school. Most people were very nervous on stage, but I loved it. Then I focused on my studies because I thought acting was a career (laughs). But I loved the stage, so I also did theater in Lahore and met Saim Sadiq. He was making a short film when we were in college and I did it. I met more directors and filmmakers like Tabish Habib and Kanwal Khoosat and made more short films and feature films until Joyland came out.

A short film
Rusty Farooq, during his college days, made his film debut with a short film with Pakistani director Saim Sadiq. Later, he appeared in various short films such as The Letters of Michael Muhammad (2019), Hit (2020), City of Smiles (2020) and May I Have This Place (2021). Farooq’s short film May I have this seat (2021) was screened at many film festivals around the world. In an interview, Saeed Sadiq, known for directing the critically acclaimed Pakistani film Joyland, spoke about Rusty Farooq and said:
I knew Rusty, we both went to LUMS, he was my junior, we made a little short film together because I wanted to apply to my grad school at Columbia. And then we kept in touch. I enjoyed working with him then, and he did another short film with Tabish, which I also saw and thought was wonderful. Puffball Studios
Rasti Farooq is the co-owner of Puffball Studios, a Pakistani animation, design and sound engineering studio. He is a writer, producer, lead voice artist and director for various Puffball projects. In an interview, Rusty Farooq talked about his studio and said:
Our creative landscape is saturated with characters, stories written by men, and the male gaze and perspective. It was difficult because I was a woman, I never expected to be in a leadership position with so much personality, but it’s comforting.”

- Rusty Farooq’s debut Lollywood film Joyland became the first Pakistani film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. The Lollywood film also received acclaim after screening at the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival, winning Cannes’ Queer Palm prize for best LGBT, queer or feminist-themed film. The film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the Special Presentations section on September 8, 2022.

- Initially, Saim Sadiq’s critically acclaimed Pakistani film Joyland (2022), starring Rusty Farooq, was banned in Pakistan, citing “highly objectionable material”. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Pakistan spoke about the film in an interview and said,
“Written complaints have been received that the film contains highly objectionable material which is inconsistent with the social values and moral standards of our society and is clearly against the norms of ‘decency and morality’ as per Section 9 of the Cinematography Ordinance, 1979,” the order said. “Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 9(2) (a) of the said Ordinance and after conducting a comprehensive enquiry, the Federal Government declares the feature film titled Joyland as an uncertified film for the whole of Pakistan in theaters under the jurisdiction of the CBFC with immediate effect.
However, on 16 November 2022, after the government of Pakistan faced severe consequences for its decision to ban the film Joyland, the government decided to lift the ban. In a tweet, Salman Sufi, an aide to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, announced the government’s decision to lift the ban on the film Joyland. He tweeted,
The film #Joyland has been cleared for release by the Censor Review Committee set up by the [Prime Minister Sharif]. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right and should be protected within the law.”
