Janmeet Singh Khalra was born on Wednesday 1 July 1987 (age 36 years; as of 2023) in Amritsar, Punjab. His zodiac sign is Cancer.

When Janmeet was 8 years old, his father was abducted and killed by the Punjab police after he drew global attention for highlighting the illegal killings and cremations of 25,000 by the Punjab police during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Since then, the Khalra family has actively collaborated with the Khalra Mission Committee to keep Jaswant Singh’s legacy alive through human rights advocacy. Having grown up in such an environment, he also put his activities into health. Studied in Amritsar. He actively represents the Sikh cause in the Sikh diaspora and other communities and speaks about his father at various religious and cultural events.

Janmeet Singh’s father, Jaswant Singh Khalra, was a prominent Sikh human rights activist who investigated and highlighted unlawful killings and cremations by the Punjab police during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He was abducted and killed in 1995 by the Punjab police for exposing illegal killings and cremations in international forums.

His mother, Paramjit Kaur, is a human rights activist and politician. He worked as a librarian at the Guru Nanak Dev University Library in Amritsar till 1999. After Khalra’s death, she became a human rights activist and worked with the Khalra Mission organization to obtain justice for the 25,000 unaccounted for bodies and bring her husband’s killers to justice.

His sister, Navkiran Kaur Khalra, is also a human rights activist associated with the Khalra Mission organization, which mainly highlights the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Punjab. Navkiran Kaur married Dalbir Singh in 2018. They have a son together.

- Janmeet comes from a family known for its legacy of activism and determination to fight social injustice. Janmeet’s ancestor Sura Singh fought alongside the Sikh warrior Banda Singh Bahadur, who was the commander of the Khalsa army. His great-grandfather, Harnam Singh, was a passenger on board the Komagata Maru (also called Guru Nanak Jahaz) with Baba Gurdit Singh, who challenged British and Canadian exclusion laws that prevented Punjabis from emigrating to Canada.

Of the 376 passengers on board, only 24 were brought into Canada. The rest were forced to return to India. Soon after the ship arrived in India, Harnam Singh was arrested and imprisoned in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. After completing his sentence, Harnam Singh went to Shanghai, China, where he was involved in the revolutionary activities of the Ghadari Party.
- In 2022, it was announced that Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh would portray Jaswant Singh Khalra in his biopic. Following this, several people staged a protest on the sets of Khalra’s biopic, protesting the portrayal of Diljit Dosanjh’s character, calling him “Videshi” and stating that he is too “westernised”.
