Short films
Rahul Chitela worked as assistant director and script supervisor for the short film Door to Door in 2010. In September 2010, Rahul Chitela started working as a creative producer at Mirabai Films in Mumbai. Rahul has also worked with Mira Nair in several films including The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), Words with Gods (2014), Queen of Katwe (2016) and A Suitable Boy (2019 TV series). In 2011, Rahul Chitela directed a short film called Muted. He also wrote the screenplay for the film. In 2016, he worked as a director and screenwriter in Shor Se Shuruaat, a collection of seven short films. He directed and wrote the screenplay for the 2016 short film Azaad, which was screened by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the World Press Freedom Day Forum in Jakarta. In 2017, Azad won the Best Short Film Award at the Indian Film Festival of Houston (IFFH).
Fiction
In 2023, Rahul Chitela made his first feature film Gulmohar. In an interview, he said that it was his wife who advised him to write a script for a family film. He also said that he decided to make Gulmohar because not many family films are made these days. Speaking about this, he said:
I had another script but none of the actors wanted to do it because it was a two hero film. I was very disappointed and then my wife told me to just write a family film. That’s what sells. And this is really the main beginning of Gulmohar. Everyone’s making these action-oriented movies full of guns and villains, and in the middle of it all, we have this sweet flower blooming. I hope people enjoy it. It is true that not so many family films and human dramas have been shot.”

Funny how it all started. When I was in school, we were expected to memorize our Hindi literature novels and I found it very difficult. Very randomly, one day, I picked up one of the novels (I think it was called Naya Rasta), started transcribing the text as dialogues between the characters and recorded it on my Walkman. I used different sounds and also played random background music on my mini-keyboard.’
