Manpreet Badal is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. A five-time member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, Manpreet served as the Minister of Finance and Planning in the Punjab government for two terms, first from 2007 to 2010 and then from 16 March 2017 to 10 March 2022.

Manpreet Singh Badal was born on Thursday, 26 July 1962 (age 60; as of 2022) in village Badal, Punjab. His zodiac sign is Leo. He did his schooling at Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Shiromani Akali Dal (where)
Manpreet Singh Badal joined his uncle’s party Shiromani Akali Dal at a young age. He contested his first Legislative Assembly election in 1995, becoming a member of the Legislative Assembly from Gidderbaha constituency. Badal retained the seat for three consecutive terms i.e. 1997, 2002 and 2007. One of the key members of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Manpreet was appointed as the Finance and Planning Minister in the Parkash Singh Badal government in 2007. In 2007, he wrote off some debts while serving as the Minister of Finance. Resigned in September 2010. A month later, he was expelled from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for anti-party activities.
Punjab People’s Party (PPP)
After being expelled from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Manpreet Singh Badal formed his own group called Punjab People’s Party (PPP) in January 2011. Before the 2012 Legislative Assembly elections in Punjab, Manpreet’s party formed an alliance with CPI, Singh’s party and formed an alliance with CPI, SPIef Minister (CPI) and Manpreef’s candidate. . He contested elections in Guiderbaha and Maury constituencies but lost both seats. Manpreet’s father, Gurdas Badal, also contested the election against Parkash Singh Badal from Lamb constituency. Gurdas lost the election by a large margin, thus losing even his security deposit. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Punjab People’s Party was allied with the Indian National Congress and Manpreet contested the election on the Congress symbol against her daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur Badal from Bathinda constituency. Manpreet lost the election by 19395 votes. Despite his defeat in the parliamentary elections, Manpreet remained active in Bathinda. On 15 January 2016, he merged his party with the Indian National Congress.
Indian National Congress (INC)
After the Punjab People’s Party merged with the Indian National Congress, Manpreet got a ticket from the INC for the 2017 Legislative Assembly elections and was the architect of the Congress manifesto for the polls. He contested from Bathinda Urban constituency and defeated his rival from Aam Aadmi Party by 18,480 votes. In the same year, he took charge of the Finance Ministry under Amarind Singh.

As Finance Minister, Manpreet Singh helped improve the state’s financial health and during his tenure, Punjab’s GSDP increased from Rs 4.71 lakh in 2017-18 to Rs 5.25 lakh in 2017-18, a year-on-year growth of 11.5 per cent. A 9.41 percent increase in GDP was also recorded, reaching 100 GEL. 5,74,760 crore and the per capita income has seen a change of 30 percent, increasing from 1.28 lakh per annum in 2016 to 1.67 lakh in 2020. 018. It became an issue of Badal’s political rivals. Manpreet did not go down well with many Congress leaders, including Punjab Pradesh Congress chief and Gidderbaha MLA Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, who once complained about Manpreet to Captain Amarind Singh. Raja Waring seems to have used his campaign slogan during the 2022 Legislative Assembly polls.

In the 2022 elections, Manpreet lost the Bathinda urban seat to Jagrup Singh Gill of the Aam Aadmi Party by 63,581 votes (the highest margin by which a candidate lost in the entire 2022 Punjab elections).

Soon after his defeat, Manpreet Singh Badal disappeared from the political scene in Punjab and again emerged from political hibernation in January 2023 to resign as a member of the Indian National Congress. He quit the party on 18 January 2023 after writing a letter to Rahul Gandhi. The letter read
I see no point in going into detail about all the specific processes that led to my final and irreversible displeasure. Suffice it to say, the way the Congress party has run its affairs and taken decisions, specifically with regard to Punjab, has been disappointing to say the least.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
After quitting the Indian National Congress, Manpreet Singh Badal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 18 January 2023 in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh.

“Shameful” note to IAS officers
In March 2018, a video of Manpreet shaming the English skills of Punjabi international media officers while addressing the Punjabi World Conference went viral on social media. In the video, he was heard saying, “No one (IAS officers) can write letters. Sometimes we feel ashamed of how these people cleared the IAS (exams). They cannot write letters and memoranda to the Government of India”. He also says, “Except for one or two other IAS officers, mostly they don’t know how to write English. They don’t know how to write a letter.” He also said that most of the work in Punjab was done in Punjabi language. After the incident, several IAS officers termed his remarks as unwarranted and offensive.
