Partha Chatterjee is an Indian politician and member of the Trinamool Congress. A five-time MLA from Behala Paschim Assembly constituency, Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in July 2022 for his alleged involvement in the teacher recruitment scam in the State School Service Commission (SSC).

Partha Chatterjee or Partha Chattopadhyay was born on Monday 6 October 1952 (70 years old; as of 2022) and he hails from Kolkata, West Bengal, India. His zodiac sign is Libra. After attending Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, he joined New Alipore Multipurpose School, Kolkata. Graduated with Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Calcutta University (1982). He also did his BA (Hons.) in Economics from Asutosh College, Kolkata. He then pursued his Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Kolkata. In 2014, he received his PhD in Economics from the University of North Bengal. He has been writing his PhD thesis since 2009 on the transformation of the industrial economy to the knowledge economy with reference to human resource management. He obtained a degree in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (PMIR) from the Industrial Society of London, UK, on a British Council scholarship.

Before entering politics, Partha Chatterjee worked as an HR professional at Andrew Yule & Co., a government company. He was also the National President of the National Institute of Personnel Management, Calcutta (Calcutta). He also served as the editor of Jago Bangla, the mouthpiece of the Trinamool Congress.

Partha Chatterjee began his political journey after joining the Indian National Congress (INC). After Mamata Banerjee left the Congress to form the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 1998, he joined her party. He served as a member of the TMC Disciplinary Committee. He later became the general secretary of TMC Bengal.

In 2001, Partha Chatterjee contested and won the Behala West Assembly seat (now known as Behala Pashim), defeating Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Niral Mukherjee by 19,477 votes.
2006 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections
In 2006, Partha Chatterjee contested and won the Behala West Assembly seat, defeating CPM candidate Niranjan Chatterjee by 5,727 votes. From 21 September 2006 to 13 May 2011, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the CPM-led Left Front government.
2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections
In 2011, Partha Chatterjee contested and won the Behala Paschim assembly seat, defeating CPM candidate Anupam Debisarkar by 59,021 votes. He was then given the portfolio of Commerce and Industry, Public Enterprises, Information Technology and Electronics and Parliamentary Affairs under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Then he was also named the deputy chairman of the chamber. On May 20, 2014, he was appointed as the Education Minister of West Bengal.

In 2016, Partha Chatterjee contested and won the Behala Paschim Assembly seat, defeating CPM candidate Kaustav Chatterjee by 8,896 votes. In the second Banerjee ministry, Partha Chatterjee continued as the Education Minister of West Bengal till 10 May 2021. Meanwhile, he was also given the portfolio of Parliamentary Affairs.

In 2021, Partha Chatterjee contested and won the Behala Paschim assembly seat, defeating BJP candidate Srabanti Chatterjee by 50,884 votes. When Mamata Banerjee was sworn in as West Bengal CM for the third consecutive time in the polls, she again allotted the portfolios of Commerce and Industry and Information Technology and Electronics to Chatterjee. In 2022, he was appointed as the National Vice President of TMC.

SSC Scam
In July 2022, Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee were arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with an alleged West Bengal teacher recruitment scam. The alleged scam in the SSC and Board of Primary Education took place during Chatterjee’s tenure as the state education minister. He faced corruption charges for securing employment for money to candidates with lower marks than those on the merit list. After his arrest by the ED, he was dismissed from the West Bengal government ministry on July 28, 2022.
