Wiki/Biography
Brij Mohan Bhardwaj was born in Sahroi village in Khair town of Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. While at school, he often reflected on situations such as poverty and suffering or death caused by lack of food and shelter. After his education in Aligarh, he dedicated himself to BAMS. Since his childhood, Dr. Brij Mohan is an ardent follower of Lord Krishna.
While attending college, he met his future wife, Madhuri Bharadwaj, who was studying in the ninth grade at a school in Aligarh. Madhuri and Mohan used to travel by bus to attend school and university respectively. On the bus, they would discuss an unusual topic for two teenagers. They would talk about their shared dream; a meaningful life, dedicated to helping those in need. In Madhuri she found an echo of her own mission. Mohan and Madhuri planned to be partners in this venture. Eight years after they met, they decided to become life partners and were married on December 8, 1993. However, they decided never to have children of their own; as they wanted to invest all their energy in the sick and the homeless. Both became doctors and began to bring the sick abandoned from the streets to their homes.
Inspired by a slime
When he was five years old, a baba named ‘Chiranjee Baba’ died in his village, Sahroi. Brij Mohan Bhardwaj was distraught over his death. Chiranjee Baba was an 85-year-old destitute who spent his days herding cows for the villagers. Chiranjee Baba had never been married and lived alone in the village. However, when Chiranjee Baba fell ill, no one came to help him and eventually he died. As she recalls the incident, she says:
Not that anyone wanted to help him. They all did. But they refrained from taking responsibility, afraid it would fall on their plates. People will help if someone takes responsibility and shows others how they can help.”
Although Brij Mohan Bhardwaj was too young to help Chiranjee Baba, the incident left a mark on Bhardwaj’s mind, prompting him to help the sick so he could take action and save lives.
Apna Ghar: Where humanity lives
After seven years of marriage, Dr. Brij Mohan Bhardwaj and Dr. Madhuri Bharadwaj established ‘Maa Madhuri Brij Varis Sewa Sadan, Apna Ghar’ on June 29, 2000, Madhuri’s 27th birthday in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. Apna Ghar went on to become a home for the homeless and destitute, the sick and the lost who are found wandering public spaces. Today, there are 21 ashrams in India – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi – providing shelter for the sick and homeless. Volunteers from Apna Ghar Sewa Samitis have established Apna Ghar Helplines, which provide immediate services to the homeless and destitute. More than 30 ambulances work around the clock to bring them to the ashrams for help.
Financing and expenses
Although most ashrams are run on public support, the ashrams in Kota and Ajmer are partially supported by the Government of Rajasthan. Each ashram displays a board outside of it; mentioning the daily needs of the ashrams, and in most cases they are met by donations from visitors. The organization often runs crowdfunding campaigns to increase costs.
