Career

Archana held the position of associate professor and head of unit in a government. medical college in Gujarat. Subsequently, she joined her husband at Anand Hospital, Laslot as a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Death

Archana Sharma died on March 30, 2022 in Dausa, Rajasthan after committing suicide. She was charged with the murder of a twenty two year old woman, Asha Bairwa. Archana operated on Asha and she had a successful delivery, but after some time, Asha died due to PPH (Postpartum Hemorrhage). After Asha’s death, her family took her body home, but after a few hours, they brought it back to the hospital. A Bharatiya Janata Party leader came with her family and started gathering people and police in front of the hospital. Police filed an FIR against Archana under Section 302 and charged her with the murder. Archana was scared and stressed by the FIR and committed suicide. She left behind a suicide note in which she wrote ‘Don’t harass innocent doctors’. She also added,

I love my husband and my children very much. Please don’t harass them after my death. I didn’t make any mistakes, I didn’t kill anyone. PPH is a known complication. Stop harassing doctors so much about this. My death can prove my innocence. DO NOT HARASS INNOCENT DOCTORS. Please. I love you. May my children not feel the absence of their mother.”

A video posted by her husband on social media put the case in the spotlight. In the video he explained the whole story and demanded justice for his wife. In the video, she said,

There should be action against the police. How did they file a Section 302 (murder) case against you? There should be a law to stop harassing doctors and demanding money from them. My wife has died, but what about other innocent doctors?

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his sorrow over Archana’s death through a post on Twitter. He also ordered the dismissal of Dausa District SP Anil Kumar and suspended the SHO (Police Station Officer). In the tweet, he wrote:

The incident of Dr. Archana Sharma’s suicide is deeply saddening. We consider doctors as gods. To save the lives of patients, each doctor does everything possible, but in case of any mishap, there is no justification for blaming the doctors.”

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) also demanded justice for Archana and held rallies.
