In a horrifying incident that took place in Dumka, Jharkhand, a 17-year-old girl named Ankita Kumari Singh was set on fire by her stalker, Shahrukh Hussain, and his friend Naeem Ansari aka Chotu Khan on August 23, 2022. The girl later succumbed to her burns on August 28, 2022.

The incident
According to Ankita Kumari’s father, Sanjeev Singh, Ankita was harassed by her neighbor, Sharukh Hussain, for more than a year. Sharukh Hussain reportedly used to follow her on her way to school and force her to have a romantic relationship with him. Later, one night before the attack, when Ankita Kumari berated Sharukh for harassing her, he bullied her to face dire consequences. Ankita immediately reported this to her father; however, since it was late at night, her father advised her to sleep and told her that she would talk about it in the morning. According to Ankita Kumari’s death declaration, while she was sleeping in her room at around 4 am on August 23, 2022, Sharukh Hussain along with her friend Chotu Khan threw gasoline from the bedroom window and set it on fire. When she woke up, her body was on fire as she ran towards her family members who were trying to put out the fire. In Ankita Kumari’s latest statement, she stated:
I informed my father about Shahurukh’s threats the night before. The next day, around 4 in the morning, he and his friend poured gasoline out of my bedroom window. I felt a sensation in my back and could smell burning. I opened my eyes only to see Shahrukh and his accomplice Chotu running away”.
She was admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College, Dumka. Later, she was referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, where she succumbed to her death on August 28, 2022. In an interview with a media source, Ankita Kumari’s father spoke about the incident, saying:
I told him that it is already late and that I will go to Shahrukh’s house and talk to his mother first thing the next day. But that day never came. I will always live with the regret of not being able to save her.”

Shortly after news of the victim’s murder broke, some reports claimed that he suffered burns to 90 percent of his body. Pankaj Sharma, a close friend of Ankita’s father, was present at the Ranchi hospital at the time of Ankita’s death. In an interview, he talked about Ankita Kumari’s condition at the hospital, saying:
She was talking to us. On August 28, until 12:30 p.m. it was fine. Around 1:15 am she began to feel restless. I ran to the ICU to call the doctor on duty, who was sitting there. But he was 45 minutes late.”

In an interview with the media, Ankita’s father, Sanjeev Singh, revealed that the Muslim bully Sharukh Hussain used to harass her and pressure her to convert her religion to Islam. He said,
He kept forcing my daughter to marry and convert for months. She was a one-sided lover, a stalker.”
Sanjeev Singh shared that Sharukh managed to get her number from someone and started calling her. Furthermore, Ankita’s father explained an incident where Sharukh broke into her house to harass Ankita; However, the children inside the house called the neighbors for help and Shahrukh was scolded by his neighbors. Ankita’s father, Sanjeev Singh quoted,
They even beat him up. But his behavior did not change ”.
Reportedly, when Ankita refused to accept a relationship with Shahrukh saying that she wanted to focus on her career, he secured her a job with the police. Her father revealed that she, despite being a brilliant student, skipped school after Sharukh started bullying her. According to the sources, Ankita was residing in the Jaruadih Kasbah in Dumka, which has a mixed Hindu and Muslim population.

Ankita Kumari’s father, Sanjeev Singh, worked as a helper in a grocery store earning Rs 324 a day. Ankita’s mother, Rekha Devi, passed away in 2021 after suffering from cancer. Ankita Kumari had two brothers named Ishika and Mayank Singh. In an interview with the media, Ankita’s sister spoke about Ankita, saying that he shared a good bond with her. she quoted,
I was his best friend after our mother died. But I couldn’t go home often after my marriage. There was no one else in the house with whom she could share what was happening. My grandparents are too old.”

Compensation
On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced compensation of Rs 10 lakhs for Ankita’s family. In addition, he spoke to the Director General of Police and asked him to speed up the investigation and transfer the murder case to the fast track court.

Later, Dumka’s DSP Noor Mustafa, accused of negligence and protecting defendant Shahrukh Hussain, was suspended. In an interview, the head of the BJP legislative party and former chief minister Babulal Marandi accused Hemant Soren’s government of failing to uphold law and order. He quoted,
The DSP was trying to protect the defendant initially since he belongs to a particular community. Action must be taken against him.”
Later, Deepak Prakash, head of the Jharkhand BJP, questioned why no member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha had yet met the victim’s family, while BJP politician Kapil Mishra said he would start a massive fundraiser for Ankita’s family. Priyanka Gandhi also took to Twitter to demand a speedy trial and the strictest punishment for Ankita Kumari’s accused murderer.

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi condemned Ankita’s death and urged that a special court be appointed to try the case. He said,
I not only condemn but demand the Jharkhand government to deal with the case properly. If possible, a (special) court will be appointed there to judge the case. He (defendant) must receive the strongest punishment according to the law.”
