CV Ananda Bose is an Indian politician and former bureaucrat who joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1977 from the Kerala cadre. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On 23 November 2022, Bose was sworn in as the Governor of West Bengal.

CV Ananda Bose was born on Tuesday, January 2, 1951 (age 72; as of 2023) in Mananam, Kottayam, Kerala. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He did his schooling at St. Ephraim High School in Mananam. After high school, Ananda completed his English studies at Kuriakose Elias College, Mananama. He then joined St. Berchmans College, Changanasseria to pursue his post-graduate studies in English. After that he did his PhD in Housing and Environment from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. During his college days, Bose excelled in debating and won several international debating competitions, including 15 gold medals. He was one of the best speakers of Kerala University. After completing his post-graduate studies, Bose started preparing for civil service exams. In 1977, he became an IAS officer from the Kerala cadre. During his training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, he topped several debates.

They have a son together, A Vasudev Bose, who is pursuing an acting course at the Stella Adler Acting Studio in Los Angeles (as of 2022). The couple also had a daughter named Nandita Bose who died of cancer in 2017. Before her death, Nandita wrote a book called Crazy for Each Other.

Career

CV Ananda Bose started his career as an Assistant Professor in a Central Government College. In the meantime, he also appeared for the banking examination and after passing it, he took up the position of Probationary Officer in State Bank of India, Kolkata.

From 1 July 1979 to 1 June 1980 at Lel Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Ananda Bose was appointed as Assistant Land Revenue Management and District Administration Assistant. After a formal evaluation of the development model, the Government of Kerala found it effective and worthy of replication. The program was then extended to around 200 panchayats in Kerala. Later, he served in various capacities such as District Collector, Chairman, Managing Director, Principal Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary in Ministries such as Ministry of Education, Home, Forest and Environment, Labor and General Administration. Ananda worked for a long time both in the Manmohan Singh government and in his home state of Kerala. During his tenure as an IAS officer, Bose introduced several changes in governance that helped ensure effective delivery of public services to the people. He initiated several movements in the fields of affordable housing, good governance, science and technology, agriculture, rural development and education. He also founded institutions like Nirmithi Kendra (Building Centre), District Tourism Board and Habitat Alliance. In 1985, while serving as Kollam District Collector, Bose established the Nirmithi Kendra (Construction Centre) to provide eco-friendly houses to people at an affordable cost. The scheme later became part of the National Housing Policy and led to Prime Minister Modi’s decision to provide affordable homes for all by 2022. In 1986, Ananda established the Regional Tourism Promotion Board to boost tourism in the state. This was considered an effective move by the Kerala government. Later, following the recommendation of the National Tourism Policy, the facility was extended to all districts of the country. Another initiative that Bose took during his tenure was the introduction of Dhanwanthari Kendras, which were introduced to provide ancillary medical facilities in hospitals. The concept has been replicated in all districts of Kerala. He was also the head of the 2011 Supreme Court Committee on Kerala Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Treasures. He last served as an administrator at the National Museum in New Delhi until his retirement in 2011.

After retiring as an IAS officer, Ananda Bose was appointed as the chairman of the government. of Public Sector Undertakings of India, Central Warehousing Corporation and Central Railway Warehousing Company Ltd. He also served as Chair of the Habitat Alliance in an advisory capacity to the UN Ecosoc. Ananda was also a member of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat. In 2018, Ananda was appointed as an advisor to the Government of Meghalaya.

Ananda Bose began his political career in 2019 by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. Bose stayed away from Kerala politics and was in touch with the party’s national leaders. In 2021, after a debacle in the Kerala Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought Ananda’s recommendations to revive the party in the state. However, the report presented by Bose was not liked by the existing leaders.

As the Governor of West Bengal

CV Ananda Bose was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal on 17 November 2022 by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu. On 23 November 2022, Bose took over the charge of Governor from Manipur Governor La. From Ganesan, who assumed additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal on 18 July 2022 after Jagdeep Dhankhar (previous Governor of West Bengal) was elected as the Vice President of India. He was administered the oath by Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Speaker Biman Banerjee and other state ministries. After being sworn in as Governor, Ananda Bose addressed the media and said:

I consider this as a great opportunity for me to personally know the great state, to cooperate with the people and to render service to the people of West Bengal. I do not consider the position of governor as a great position, but as an opportunity to do my service for the welfare of the people.”
