Ashwini Vaishnau is an Indian politician and Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology. He is a 1994 Ex-Odisha cadre IAS officer.

Ashwini Vaishnau, also Ashwini Vaishnavi, was born on Saturday, July 18, 1970.age 51 years; As of 2021) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. His zodiac sign is Cancer. He did his schooling at St. Anthony’s Convent School and Mahesh School in Jodhpur. He was the topper of his state in his class 11 boards. He attended MBM College of Engineering, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, Rajasthan to pursue BE and graduated with Gold Medal in 1992. In 1994, he received his MTech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. After cracking the civil services exam, he worked as an IAS officer. In 2008, he went to the United States to pursue an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he graduated in 2010.

Career

public services

In 1993, he cracked UPSC exams with AIR 27 and was allotted Odisha cadre. As an IAS officer, he served as Collector in Balasore and Cuttack districts of Odisha. While he was serving in Balasore, the state was hit by a cyclone which killed many people. Ashwini is said to have handled the situation effectively, which brought him into the limelight of politicians. The National Human Rights Commission has expressed appreciation to Ashwin for the sincerity, dedication and commitment he has shown in organizing and implementing relief and rehabilitation work in his district. He worked in Odisha as an IAS until he was appointed Deputy Secretary in the office of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003.

While working in the PMO, he contributed to the creation of a framework for public-private partnerships in infrastructure projects. He was appointed as Vajpayee’s private secretary after the BJP-led NDA lost the 2004 elections. In 2006, he became the Deputy Chairman of the Mormugao Port Trust, where he worked for the next two years before leaving for the US to pursue his MBA. After returning to India in 2010, he voluntarily resigned from his post due to financial debt for his studies in the US.

After receiving his MBA degree, he returned to India and joined GE Transportation as Managing Director. He then joined Siemens in Gurgaon as Vice President Locomotives & Head Urban Infrastructure Strategy. He also served as one of the three directors at Thriveni Pellets Private Limited, a unit of Thriveni Earth Movers Private Limited, one of India’s largest mines. In 2012, he quit his corporate job and launched Three Tee Auto Logistics Private Limited and Vee Gee Auto Components Private Limited, both automotive component manufacturing units in Gujarat. Vaishnav won the Rajya Sabha elections with the help of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members in Odisha, opening an eye to rival BJP-RJD relations. This came despite many ruling BJD members opposing his nomination and suspecting that the BJP Supremo, Naveen Patnaik, had bowed to Narendra Modi-Amit Shah pressure to support Vaishnau. On June 28, 2019, he was appointed as a member of the Subordinate Legislation and Petitions Committee and the Science and Technology, Environment and Forests Committee. He argued that the economic slowdown in India was cyclical in nature and was not a structural slowdown. He believed that investing was better than spending money. He supported the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill on 5 December 2019 in the Rajya Sabha. He also raised issues ranging from ship recycling bill to protection of women in Rajya Sabha. In April 2021, he was appointed as a member of the Press Council of India (PCI) for three years. On 8 July 2021, in a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed Minister of Railways, Electronics and Information Technology and Minister of Communications.
