Anil Deshmukh is an Indian politician who belongs to the Nationalist Congress Party. He was also a member of the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He represents the Katol Vidhan Sabha constituency.

Anil Vasantrao Deshmukh was born on 9 May 1950 (age 72; as of 2022) in Katol, Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Taurus. Anil completed his schooling from Katoli High School and went to College of Agriculture, Nagpur to pursue his B.Sc. degree followed by M. Sc. quality. With interests in politics, Anil started working as chairman of Nagpur Zila Parishad in the early years of his political career.

Career
In 1995, Anil contested the Maharashtra state assembly elections from Katoli constituency as an independent candidate. Anil joined the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government in 1995.

Anil Deshmukh has been appointed as the Minister of State for School Education, Higher and Technical Education and Culture in Maharashtra. It banned the practice of private coaching classes conducted by teachers working in regular service of government or private schools. He also launched a campaign aimed at reducing the weight of school bags. He also initiated the ‘Bhushan Award’, the highest and most prestigious civilian award of the state of Maharashtra, presented annually by the state government.

From 1999 to 2001
After winning the elections, Anil Deshmukh was appointed Minister of State for School Education, Information and Public Relations, Sports and Youth Welfare. During this time, he received orders to start construction of India’s second largest air-conditioned indoor sports stadium in Nagpur.
From 2001 to 2004
In 2001, he was appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Excise, Food and Drugs in Maharashtra. He has passed a law in the state banning the sale and purchase of gutkha as it contains carcinogens that have disastrous effects on human health.
From 2004 to 2008
Anil Deshmukh became the Minister of Public Works (Public Enterprises) of Maharashtra. During his tenure as PWD minister, he looked after the Bandra Worli Sea Link project. The 4.7 km long, two-way 4-lane bridge is another world-class landmark in the country.

From 2009 to 2014
In 2009, he was the Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection in Maharashtra. He suggested introduction of biometric card system for ration card holders under public distribution system. Along with this, he also proposed to stop the computerization of public distribution system. It also introduced a stock monitoring system for essential commodities that was available online at any time. This monitoring service has helped to improve the delivery service. Trucks used to deliver PDS goods were given a specific color to distinguish them from other transport trucks.

After losing the 2014 elections, Anil Deshmukh won the 2019 elections and became the Home Minister of Maharashtra. It has provided self-balancing electric scooters to the Mumbai Police to help them patrol. He also announced Rs. 50 GEL for the families of police officers who died during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mumbai Police has also deployed several drones in densely populated areas and slums to search for lockdown violators. Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parm Bir Singh, Anil Deshmukh resigned as Maharashtra Home Minister on 5 April 2021 after the Bombay High Court directed the CBI to investigate corruption charges against Deshmukh.

Confrontation
In 2021, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into various corrupt practices of Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. The charges against Home Minister Anil Deshmukh came days after the probe into the Ambani bomb scare case. Earlier, Sachin Vase was arrested for his involvement in the case and possible connection with Mansukh Hiren’s murder. Param Bir Singh presented a letter in a press conference stating that Anil Deshmukh had asked Sachin Vase for Rs. 100 crore every month from around 1,750 bars, restaurants and other establishments in Mumbai. Anil Deshmukh asked Sachin Vase for Rs. 2-3 lari every month from these 1750 institutions, a total of Rs. 40-50 million every month.
In response to the letter, Anil Deshmukh tried to defend himself and said.
It is a conspiracy by Param Bir Singh to derail the investigation into the explosives case and the suspicious death of Mansukh Hiren. The Chief Minister should investigate the allegations impartially. This is an attempt to defame me and the Maha Vikas Agadi government.”
Anil Deshmukh also said that if Param Bir fails to prove his claims, Anil will file a defamation case against him. He also said –
Due to problems in the explosives case, Singh made baseless allegations to blackmail the government.
On 6 April 2021, the CBI registered a preliminary inquiry to probe corruption charges against Deshmukh. On 1 November 2021, Deshmukh reported to the Enforcement Directorate and after 12 hours of questioning, the agency arrested him on charges of corruption and money laundering and sent him to Arthur Road Jail. On 29 December 2021, his name appeared in the supplementary prosecution complaint (chargesheet) filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering and corruption case. On 4 October 2022, despite granting him bail, the Bombay High Court remanded him till 12 October after the Enforcement Directorate sought a stay pending an appeal in the Supreme Court. After the Bombay High Court granted him bail on December 12, 2022, the CBI sought time to file an appeal in the Supreme Court and he was later released from jail on December 28, 2022.
