Career
After completing his formal education, he started his career as an Assistant Manager at ICICI Bank, Mumbai in 2000. In October 2001, he joined Calyon as a business analyst. He joined HSBC in 2003 and retired as Vice President in 2010. From July 2010 to June 2012, he held the position of Vice President – Global Treasury Sales at South Bank of America, Bengaluru. In 2015, he moved to Delhi where he became the head of the BJP IT Cell. In this position, he oversees the party’s social media presence. His association with BJP can be traced back to 2009 when he worked as a banker. That year, he founded the Friends of the BJP forum, which launched an SMS campaign to publicize the party and bring it to power. The other founding members were Rajesh Jain, managing director of Mumbai-based IT firm Net Core Solutions, and Piyush Goel, a financial consultant. They encouraged people to join the group by logging on to www.friendsofbjp.org. A public meeting in Lucknow brought Malviya to prominence. Ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP appointed Malviya as its co-in-charge to oversee the party’s affairs in the state. He co-authored The Citizenship Debate: CAA & NRC (2020) with Salman Khurshid.

A series of disinformation campaigns
Malviya is often accused of spreading misinformation and spreading fake news through BJP’s social media handles. In January 2020, Amit Malviya shared a video on his Twitter account of a group of men talking about the Shaheen Bagh protesters. The video suggested that women protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, were being paid to do so. The man in the video also claimed that the protest was “sponsored” by the Congress party. The allegations were found to be unfounded by a joint investigation by fact-checking sites Alt News and Newslaundry.

Two days after the ‘Sponsored Shaheen Bagh Protest’ video, an elderly Muslim man shared a photo of him eating biryani in Shaheen Bagh with a caption that read:
Proof of spread of biryani in Shahen Bagh!’
The reference to the act of serving food at the protest was considered “strange” by various media houses. After that, Alt News began monitoring his social media presence and found that Malviya had repeatedly used misinformation to discredit individuals, communities, opposition parties, leaders and movements. In December 2019, Malviya said that slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad” were raised at the Clock Tower in Lucknow during an anti-CAA rally. Alt News clarified that the protesters did not raise pro-Pakistan slogans but said “Kashif Saab Zindabad”. According to reports, Kashif Ahmed was the head of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which led the anti-CAA protest in Lucknow.

On 16 December 2019, he released a video of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, saying they were raising slogans against Hindus. His caption read,
AMU students chant “हिंदुवो की कब्र खुदेगी, AMU की धारती पर…”
Which translated as: “The grave of Hindus will be carved on the chest of AMU”.

However, Alt News clarified that the students were actually raising slogans against Hindutva, Savarkar, BJP, Brahminism and casteism. they chanted
हिन्दुत्व की कब्र खुदेगी, AMU की कबर प॰ा, कबर खुडेगी, AMU की कब्र पर, ये ब्ज्य की की गी, AMU की कब्र, Brahminavad की कबर, AMU कबर आती पर, ये जातीवाद की ब्र.”
Which translates to “Hindutva’s grave will be dug on AMU’s chest, Savarkar’s grave will be dug on AMU’s chest, BJP’s grave will be dug on AMU’s chest, Brahminism’s grave will be dug on AMU’s chest, Castism’s grave will be dug.” In January 2020, he shared a video of Arfa Khanum’s speech at Aligarh Muslim University, which was cropped and misrepresented. Malviya argued that Arfa Khanum urged the CAA protesters to be “inclusive only until non-Muslims start accepting their religious identity, beliefs and slogans of supremacy as gospel. In contrast, Alt News explained that Arfa called on protesters to take a more secular approach to protesting the CAA. In 2017, Malviya shared a collage of pictures of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru with various women, portraying him as an immoral man. Malviya apparently rattled INC leaders by claiming that Hardik Patel, whose sex tape went viral on the Internet in November 2017, and Jawaharlal Nehru shared the same DNA.

Alt News later clarified that most of the photographs show Jawaharlal Nehru with his sister or niece. The tweet drew a lot of criticism for Malviya on social media and she was heavily trolled by various netizens.

Sues The Wire
In October 2022, Amit Malviya filed an FIR against The Wire for “maligning his reputation”. Founder Siddharth Vardhajaran along with editors Siddharth Bhatia, MK Venu and Jahnavi Sen have been booked by the Delhi Police under Sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery to cheat), 469 (forgery to defame), 471 (conspiracy of document), 2005) and 34 of the IPC (general intention). The Wire, in a series of news stories that were later retracted, alleged that Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, had granted Malviya special privileges, allowing him to remove any content he believed to be critical of the BJP.

On 28 November 2020, Rahul Gandhi posted a tweet showing a policeman charging an elderly farmer, saying:
It is a very sad photo. Our slogan was ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ but today PM Modi’s arrogance has made the Jawan stand against the farmer. This is very dangerous.”
The tweet showed a farmer who was accused during the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protests. Following this, Amit Malviya disputed Rahul’s claim and posted a tweet in which he compared two visuals – the first visual was a picture posted by Rahul Gandhi titled “Propaganda” and the second visual was a short video clip titled “Reality” which claimed that the police did not even touch the farmer.

In December 2020, Twitter labeled Amit Malviya’s tweet as “manipulated media” based on its synthetic and manipulated media policy. Apparently, Boom, a fact-checking site, spoke to the farmer, Sukhdev Singh pictured, and it confirmed that he had sustained injuries as alleged by the police.
Allegations by Subramyan Swamy
In September 2020, BJP’s Subramanian Swamy accused Amit Malviya of campaigning against him using fake tweets. Sumy also gave an ultimatum to the party to remove Malviya from the post of BJP IT Cell chief. Swai said Malviya’s removal is a “compromise proposal” that he made to party president JP Nadda. If Malviya is not removed, he said, it means the party does not want to “protect me”. Despite his ultimatum, the BJP reappointed Malviya as the head of the party’s IT cell. Swamy then posted a tweet saying,
Now that Malviya has been re-appointed, I have to say: My earlier tweet was to check if Malviya was sponsoring the fake ID tweets on her own. Now it is clear. PMO Haren Joshi was behind it. I wrote a PM two weeks ago to provide this with the documents. “
A case has been filed against a tweet about Rahul Gandhi
On 28 June 2023, the Indian National Congress filed a complaint against Malviya, accusing him of mocking Rahul Gandhi through a tweet. In a tweet, Malviya wrote:
